Joining Our Hearts with the Families of Newtown
The Children's Room sends its thoughts and deepest sympathies to the community of Newtown, Connecticut, and all of the families affected by Friday's violence. hands holding candleWe know this heartbreaking event has changed their lives forever, and our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by this tragedy.

Even if you don't have a personal connection to the victims, you may still find yourself overcome with feelings of sadness, despair, and fear.

It is natural for events such as these to trigger feelings of grief, especially if you have been impacted by the early death of a loved one or have had someone close to you die through violence.

How can we possibly explain such a violent and tragic event to our children?

Deborah Rivlin, Director of Education & Training, was a recent guest on  Radio Boston - WBUR 90.9, sharing her thoughts on how to best talk with and support children following this traumatic event.

Deborah suggests we first find out what the child knows and then give them an honest account of what happened, at a level appropriate to their developmental age. Talking about things creates an opportunity to clear up any misperceptions the child has and to reassure them that you are doing everything you can to keep them safe.

Remembering Loved Ones during the Holidays

Our Community Candle Lighting on December 12th was a great

candle lighting 2012_memory activity
Fiona creates her own luminaire, decorating a paper bag to place a candle inside

opportunity to pause during this busy season and remember people who are special to us. Friends from our community came together to light candles, share stories, and join in memory activities.

Everyone was invited to contribute a memory to our community poem, which was then read out loud at the end of the evening. This might be a meaningful activity to incorporate into your family's holiday gathering this year. Simply have everyone write down one memory on a slip of paper, collect all of the papers, and have one or more people read your completed family poem.

Candle Lighting Community Poem

I remember the feeling of being twirled by my grandfather,

The scent of my mom's geraniums.

I remember the perfume soft smell my son was wearing

on his last day,

The way her contagious laughter made me laugh hysterically,

His laugh and the corny jokes he always shared.

I remember the smell of scones on a Sunday morning,

The smell of my father's pipe.

I remember holding his hand as we walked

candle lighting memory bags
luminaires decorated with comforting scenes and memories

down the street,

The smell of my husband's cologne.

I remember the voice of my dad

singing in the car.

I remember her great taste for sweets,

Flannel pajamas, fanny farmer

chocolates, and baileys irish cream.

I remember singing, cooking, laughing,

talking together.

I remember.
