Slough Buzz

Your gift can help us protect the past and the future!

Iconic buildings have a lot in common with protected lands -- once gone, they are gone forever.

Elkhorn Slough Foundation's Porter Ranch property has deep ties to early California history.  Then known as Rancho Bolsa de San Cayetano, the ranch was part of a Mexican land grant owned by the family of General Mariano Vallejo. Around 1865, John T. Porter purchased the ranch from the Vallejo family; in the 1970s, the Porter Family generously donated Porter Ranch for conservation.

Yet conservation doesn't prevent a building from aging or shifting. Building a firm foundation is critical to ensure the property's future. If we delay, the building will become unsafe. The Elkhorn Slough Foundation envisions this ranch house serving as a community hub but, unless we act now, that vision is only a dream.

Your gift through Monterey County Gives! will help us repair the Porter Ranch House's foundation and create our vision for Porter Ranch's future as a center for community outreach, education, and conservation.

And now, by giving through the Monterey County Gives! matching grant program, your contribution can go even farther!

In addition to early California history, Porter Ranch is home to a wealth of natural history, including birds and wildlife, endangered native plants, sprawling coast live oaks, and spectacular shows of spring wildflowers.

Through December 31, Monterey County Gives! will match a percentage of every dollar given through the campaign.

So stretch your gift and donate today!
