ESF Earns National Recognition

Elkhorn Slough Foundation's Long Valley property

The Elkhorn Slough Foundation has received accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance. ESF is one of only 280 land trusts from across the country that has been awarded accreditation since Fall 2008.

As an accredited land trust, ESF is authorized to display a seal that indicates we meet national standards for excellence, uphold the public trust and ensure that our conservation efforts are permanent.  Thanks to our friends and supporters for helping ESF earn this important national recognition.

The Art of the Slough

Detail of a Great Blue Heron from a poster featuring Elkhorn Slough's key species, by artist Laura Vollset

Have you seen our new educational poster featuring key species of Elkhorn Slough watershed?  Watch an incredible new time-lapse video on the ESF YouTube channel that shows how artist Laura Vollset created this stunning work of art, from sketch to finished piece.

Laura will share her work at the Elkhorn Slough Reserve Open House on September 27. And, if you are inspired, register for ESF's Sketching at the Slough workshop on October 11, where Laura will offer tips for capturing the slough's natural wonders on paper.

Bad News for Weeds...
An infestation of invasive Cape ivy is treated with spray herbicide.

ESF's land stewardship team has recently begun a multi-year project to eradicate an infestation of highly invasive Cape Ivy from seven acres of coast live oak woodlands on our Porter Ranch property.

This is one of several projects in which Elkhorn Slough land stewards are working to identify, monitor, prevent, and eliminate invasive weeds.

Because sharing what we learn with other land management professionals and volunteers is key to our success, Reserve land stewards Andrea Woolfolk and Bree Candiloro have been involved in planning the Central California Invasive Weed Symposium, which takes place at CSUMB on November 6.

Tidal Marsh Restoration Project Update

Last year, approximately 50,000 cubic yards of dirt was delivered from the Pajaro River Flood Control Project to the Tidal Marsh Restoration Project site.

With about 50,000 cubic yards of dirt delivered to our Tidal Marsh Restoration Project site and our restoration plan complete, the Tidal Wetland Project -- a collaborative endeavor of the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and Elkhorn Slough Foundation -- has started a formal environmental review process.

Reserve researchers have also begun designing experiments to monitor the success of this unique restoration effort in improving the health of the marsh and its wildlife.

Our special thanks go to Graniterock for their generous support of the Tidal Marsh Restoration Project, ensuring special care and consideration for this sensitive habitat.

Sightings: Birds...and Birders

The fall migration season has started, and we've been seeing all sorts of birds at the slough -- soaring American white pelicans, spinning red-necked phalaropes, and flitting Western bluebirds.

We've also been seeing birders by the drove!  Perhaps they're getting geared up for the 10th Annual Monterey Bay Birding Festival, which runs from September 25-28.

Or maybe they read the recent Sentinel article about an Early Bird walk led by Monterey Bay birding expert Rick Fournier. Reserve Early Bird tours are offered on the first Saturday of every month at 8:30am.

And if you want to identify fall shorebirds, register for ESF's Fall Birding outing, which Rick will lead on the morning of Saturday, November 15.
The Elkhorn Slough Foundation is a nonprofit, community-supported organization working to conserve and restore Elkhorn Slough and its watershed. The Foundation works with local, state and national constituencies to protect our natural heritage.
