Work at Whistlestop:

Levee Repairs will Enhance Habitat and Access

Construction has begun on the Whistlestop Levee. Trails to Hummingbird Island and the North Marsh Overlook will be closed through July.

Significant improvements to the levee at Whistlestop Lagoon are currently underway. The levee doubles as the trail to Hummingbird Island, so trails to Hummingbird Island and the North Marsh Overlook are closed now through July 15 while construction is taking place. A short detour will allow visitors to complete the South Marsh Loop trail.

The enhancement project will upgrade the levee and remove impaired culverts (pipes that carry water through the levee).  In addition to stabilizing the trail and providing safer access to Hummingbird Island, the repairs will help restore natural tidal flow, improve water quality, and increase access for aquatic wildlife.

While the work is in progress, why not try another of the many wonderful trails open to explore on the Reserve? See you soon!

Enjoy the sunset and an overview of the properties your membership helps protect.

If you became a member of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation this or last year, we invite you to register for our free New Member Sunset Stroll.  We will meet at the Reserve on Friday, May 30 at 6:15pm, then head out for a walk on lands conserved by the Foundation.

From atop a chaparral crowned knoll, you'll see how your membership contributions help protect the watershed -- all as you soak in panoramic vistas of rolling grasslands, oak woodlands, meandering marshes and, of course, the sunset over Elkhorn Slough.

Space is limited for this free event, so register today.  Not a member yet? Join today and take advantage of this unique opportunity!

Kayaking the Upper Slough

Saturday, June 7, 9am-12noon

Get a new perspective on the protected uplands and wetlands of Elkhorn Slough.

With foggy mornings and sunny afternoons, June is a wonderful time to glide across the calm waters of the slough.  Watch for shorebirds and marine life as we launch from Kirby Park to ride the tides of Elkhorn Slough.

The tour will be lead by expert guide Ron Eby and, on this trip, ESF Stewardship Director Kim Hayes will be along to talk about how protecting and restoring the hills above the slough is making a difference in the slough itself.  Enjoy a unique perspective of the Upper Slough, including views of some of the lands your Foundation membership helps protect forever.

Register today -- our kayaking excursions fill up fast!  Don't forget, we have special pricing if you bring your own kayak  (BYOK).

A View of the Slough -- for You!

Detail of a great blue heron from original artwork by Laura Vollset,
available as a poster at the Reserve bookstore.

Last month we let you know about Santa Cruz artist Laura Vollset's original artwork featuring Elkhorn Slough, on display through June 29 as part of the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History's special exhibit, The Art of Nature.

We're pleased to announce that prints of the painting are now available at the Reserve bookstore.  The poster features a number of plants, birds, and animals that call the slough home.  It is both beautiful and educational, for the back of the poster features an identification key of all the species.  Keep your eyes on the Buzz for a special events where Laura will be signing the posters.

Bring a view of the slough to a spot near you!
