Cosmic Center of Sea Otter Conservation
| |
 | | With counts exceeding 100 animals, Elkhorn Slough has the highest concentration of Southern sea otters on the California coast. |
Elkhorn Slough, home to the largest concentration of sea otters on the coast, has become a hub for researching these furry marine mammals. In addition to outreach programs for Sea Otter Awareness Week, Elkhorn Slough Reserve has recently been involved in several projects related to sea otter conservation and research. - Reserve researchers Brent Hughes, Kerstin Wasson, with Reserve volunteer and citizen-scientist Rob Eby and others, have published a groundbreaking study of how sea otters have promoted the recovery of healthy eelgrass beds in Elkhorn Slough by controlling crab populations. To learn more about this amazing research effort, which received international media attention, visit our Science in Action page.
- Reserve scientists are also working in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and others to understand how sea otters use the estuary habitat of Elkhorn Slough. The study involves capturing 20 sea otters, taking medical readings and blood samples, and fitting the otters with radio transmitters and depth recorders. The three-year study will provide detailed data about otter movements and feeding behaviors, and will inform our efforts to help restore sea otter habitat and improve water quality in the estuary.
- Another way we promote sea otter conservation is through public education. To that end, Elkhorn Slough Foundation -- in collaboration with Sea Studios Foundation and California State Parks -- has installed interpretive panels at Moss Landing State Beach to teach visitors about sea otters and their behaviors, and to prevent well-meaning onlookers from unintentionally disturbing the otters. Check out the panels on your next visit to Moss Landing State Beach, or attend our ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 10, 2013 at 10:00 am.
Finally, a teaser: stay tuned to our Facebook page and website during Sea Otter Awareness Week (September 22 - 28) for the unveiling of a unique project that has been years in making -- we're sure you'll be as excited as we are!
