MYLAN WTT LEAGUE DIRECTOR SPOTLIGHT: DAVID BELL

Meet USPTA Certified Teaching Professional David Bell. For over twenty years, this tennis enthusiast has been actively growing the sport wherever he sees fit. Bell originally began teaching in Massachusetts, but when opportunity knocked in 2004, he headed south to his current location in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Although Bell primarily runs the 23-court Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center, he is also the tennis director for all of Raleigh. This translates into Bell being responsible for maintaining 112 courts at 25 different locations. In 2015, another facility is expected to be built thanks to Bell and the city council. This $5 million project will add 20 more courts to the city of Raleigh.

In addition to operating the city's tennis courts, Bell also runs numerous programs for a variety of players. "We are really excited about our 10 & under program because we just purchased all the equipment and our staff received all the training to get kids playing at an earlier age," Bell said. "As you see in the adult league, the kids also love competition so this will allow our newest tennis players to get some competition."

As for the adult population, Bell found that using a World TeamTennis format, which has seen more than 4,000 participants in the area since 2004, has been very useful in getting them involved. "It provides a different perspective than USTA League tennis because it is more social, has a different format, and there are some adults who are attracted to the World Team format that would just not play other types of leagues," Bell said. "We have adults participating who otherwise would not be participating in a competitive league, so it is great to have an alternative like this."

All of his efforts have resulted in Mylan World TeamTennis presenting Bell with the 2012 Delaine Mast Award, an elite honor bestowed upon only the nation's top league directors. "I was very surprised when I won because I realize that the players vote on this," he said. "[Although I'm honored,] it is not just an award to me for running it because it is also an award for our staff because our league program is just too big for one person to run."
