Nonprofit Association of Oregon
  November 2013 eNews

From the Desk of Jim White

Jim WhiteDear Friends,

As Thanksgiving approaches NAO gives thanks for all that nonprofits do in Oregon for the benefit of our communities. We are especially thankful for the years of dedicated service that many of our most distinguished nonprofit leaders have given the sector.

As many of you know, our sector is going through an enormous transition of knowledge and experience, as one generation retires and a new generation of leaders takes the reins of leadership.

Protect Giving Day: November 20, 2013

As lawmakers in Washington, DC work to reform America's tax code and address our fiscal crisis, America's nonprofit sector faces a continued threat because the charitable giving incentive remains on the table. The Charitable Giving Coalition, a group of more than 60 nonprofits, foundations, and charitable organizations, is making sure lawmakers have a clear understanding about the importance of the charitable giving incentive and what's at stake in our communities if limits are placed on it. Nonprofit leaders will descend upon DC on November 20 for the second annual Protect Giving Day. Hundreds of front-line nonprofits and sector leaders will deliver a clear message--with the economy continuing to recover and nonprofits asked to do more with less, now is not the time to hamstring private philanthropy by limiting the charitable contribution deduction. Nonprofit leaders will share real-life examples of the impact of charitable giving and the ripple effects on nonprofits at work in our communities every day.

NAO supports the work of the Charitable Giving Coalition, and we are proud that several Oregon nonprofits will be present on November 20 for Protect Giving Day.

Find out what the Oregon contingent has to say, and what you can do to support this effort.

Rapid Response Pulse Poll: Government Contracts/Grants

NAO is asking for your help in improving the way governments interact with nonprofits through contracts and grants. We need your insights as we seek the most current information regarding grant and contracting relationships between nonprofits and governments (federal, state, and local) here in Oregon.

If your organization has government contracts or grants, please take a few moments to complete this poll regarding your recent experiences.

Please complete the survey no later than December 2, 2013 (one response per organization). Also, please share this message broadly with your colleague organizations that may have government contracts or grants. Thanks for your help. If you have any questions, please email us at news@nonprofitoregon.org.

Cultivating Nonprofit Resilience in Rural Oregon

Oregonians depend on the nonprofit sector for a wide range of critical services. Therefore, nonprofits have not only an interest but also a responsibility to build our resilience. The current economic climate has only increased the importance of cultivating our organizational capacity to adapt to change or crisis. Particularly in rural Oregon, where resources are often more constrained, the need for resiliency is amplified.

What can nonprofits do to cultivate this capacity? In an upcoming series we'll explore three key elements in rural nonprofit resilience:

  1. Inclusive leadership
  2. Diversified resources
  3. Collaboration

Keep your eye out for Nonprofit Resiliency in Rural Oregon, starting in our December eNews. We'll share information and stories, connect you to some tools and resources, and ask for your insights and feedback. Before we get started on the series, we'd love to hear from you:

  • What do you want to know about nonprofit resilience?
  • What do you see as key factors in nonprofit resilience?
  • Do you have an example of a rural nonprofit showing high resiliency?

Idealware's Donor Management Systems Guide Gets an Update

Years ago, Idealware and NTEN created the first Consumers Guide to Donor Management Systems, which reviewed a number of low-cost systems against a list of criteria and made direct apples-to-apples comparisons to help readers decide which could best help them meet their missions. The marketplace evolved, with new systems appearing and existing systems introducing new features and pricing structures. They updated the report in 2011, and introduced a long-anticipated 2013 update last month, expanded to include nine new systems--36 in all. Find the updated guide here.
