From the Desk of Jim White

Jim White Americans of all ages, all stations of life, and all types of disposition are forever forming associations...In democratic countries knowledge of how to combine is the mother of all other forms of knowledge; on its progress depends that of all the others. -Alexis de Tocqueville

Dear Friends,

I hope that you will all indulge me to quote de Tocqueville again so soon in my letter to you. He is one of my heroes and certainly was spot on when referring to the power and role of social benefit organizations. I suspect that the August to September slate of meetings in Oregon would make de Tocqueville quite happy. Several important gatherings and discussions took place across the state, with more to come in October. Let me highlight just a few here and link you to information where you can find out more.

Central Oregon Nonprofit Leaders' Roundtable Recap

On August 27, 2013, approximately 30 nonprofit leaders from across Central Oregon attended a roundtable meeting in Bend organized by Sen. Tim Knopp (R-Bend), District 27, and Rep. Jason Conger (R-Bend), District 54. Sen. Knopp and Rep. Conger cautioned the group that legislation eliminating certain charitable itemized deductions for taxpayers may be reintroduced next session. NAO Executive Director Jim White was invited to address the group and provide background information on policies that pose a threat to nonprofits by eroding their ability to raise vital funds for their missions. Read more.

Town Halls

NAO Executive Director Jim White met with nonprofit leaders in four communities--Baker City, Klamath Falls, Newport and Roseburg--during September as part of our ongoing Town Hall conversations.

We had a great turnout and really enjoyed the opportunity to connect with so many nonprofit leaders, staff members, Board members, volunteers, and community stakeholders around our state. At the Roseburg Town Hall, Rep. Tim Freeman (R-Roseburg), District 2, joined us to discuss nonprofit concerns and community needs as well as field questions from the group. NAO is currently preparing a report to send to the community members that attended the Town Halls and will use the information in our planning for future activities and programs in support of nonprofits.

Oregon Humanities Conversation Project: Got talk. Will travel.

Talk is fun. Talk is happening. And talk is cheap free!

Since 2009, more than 290 public conversations have taken place in more than 140 communities across the state. Oregonians have talked about science and democracy, rethinking downtowns, racial diversity in Oregon, jazz and community building, and friendship, among many other topics. Now is the time for your Oregon nonprofit to join the conversation! Through September 30, request free Conversation Project programs from Oregon Humanities and get your community talking about ideas that matter.

Conversation Project programs are designed to improve understanding of diverse perspectives on a given subject and are led by humanities experts who have been trained as conversation facilitators, can connect the subject to participants' experiences and to the local community, and model critical thinking without advocating a particular political agenda. Themed series and programs offered in Spanish are available.

To see the new catalog of 2013 to 2015 Conversation Project programs, watch video introductions to programs, and download an application, please visit oregonhumanities.org.
