  June 2013 eNews

From the Desk of Jim White

Dear Friends,

As we draw near to the end of the 2013 Oregon legislative session, June has been an active month on the advocacy front for NAO.

I had the opportunity to visit Washington DC for the National Council of Nonprofits annual conference, where I connected with fellow MJ Murdock Charitable Trust cohort members and met with Oregon's congressional delegation on Lobby Day. As we recap NAO's public policy work on behalf of the nonprofit sector in Oregon, I also want to draw your attention to Oregon's common sense approach to addressing issues.

FAQ on Oregon House Bill (HB) 2060

Check out the comprehensive FAQ on HB 2060 that we developed in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Justice Charitable Activities Section.

Help End the Overhead Myth

Organizations that have a robust infrastructure are more likely to succeed than those that do not. Nonprofits should not be starved from investing in themselves as enterprises. Instead of focusing on overhead, more attention should be paid to other factors of nonprofit performance such as transparency, governance, leadership, and results. That is not to say that overhead has no role in ensuring charity accountability. The overhead ratio can offer insight and a valid data point for rooting out fraud and poor financial management. That is why NAO supported Oregon's new law, HB 2060, that sets a 30% program spending benchmark for charities. Let's all help to get the word out to our donors and other supporters that investments in training, planning, evaluation, and internal systems--as well as our efforts to raise money to operate programs--helps us to sustain and improve our nonprofits.

Please participate in the campaign to end the focus on overhead in these four key ways:
