The One
by Denise Hedges
It's perverse.
Some of the smartest, most competent, most accomplished, most engaging people in the world doubt themselves. They have so much to offer, yet they question their self-worth and the value they bring to others to the point where they hesitate to market themselves confidently. They hold back, either consciously or subconsciously.
They don't seek out the opportunities to put themselves out there or they're less than assertive when it comes to telling people what they can do for them ... or both.
And while it hurts me to see it, I understand. The last thing you want to do when you think you don't have a good voice is to sing loudly for all to hear.
On the other hand, a great many of their less smart, less competent, less service-oriented, and less ethical counterparts have no problem whatsoever in grabbing whatever business they can however they can.
So, the best service providers in any particular field are often not even being discovered, much less chosen to do the work they should be doing.
Why do good people doubt themselves? Oh, I could write a book on that one, but let's just say it comes down to this. Many people hold beliefs about themselves that are complete nonsense. And if they're ever going to change how they "show up" to people in their target markets, they have to change those beliefs ... or at least strengthen the positive ones.
We just finished a two-day Speaker's Boot Camp live intensive weekend with some of the most experienced, talented, earnest, and just plain wonderful people you'd ever want to meet! To say they had a lot to offer to the people they've chosen to serve would be to sell them short. Every single one had the ability to dramatically change the quality of life of the folks they work with.
And yet, most questioned themselves to one degree or another ... some seriously.
Enter the conundrum. When you're up there speaking to people, telling them what you do and how it can benefit them, it seems as if it's all about you ... and that can seem immodest. Well, it is about you ... and it isn't.
It is about you in a way, but it's a good way.
What if you're the one?
What if you're the one person that can make a positive life-changing difference for that special someone listening to you at that moment?
Really think about that.
It isn't about you in the sense that you're there for them ... not you.
Is it right to deny people who need you the best you have to offer just because you're concerned about your personal stuff? No. It wouldn't serve them and it wouldn't serve you.
So, don't hold back. Do what you're here to do. I don't care if you're scared. We all get scared. I don't care if you have doubts. We all have doubts. Even if you're trembling, act as if you're confident. Even if you wonder sometimes if you have all it takes, speak boldly of what's possible as a result of working with you.
After all, what'll happen if you don't?
You all know the movie, It's a Wonderful Life. What would have happened if George Bailey hadn't been saved by his guardian angel?
We know, because we got to see it. Everything would have changed ... for the worse.
You and I don't get to see what life would be like if we didn't touch the lives we touch. But it isn't hard to imagine.
Everything would change ... for the worse.
Think about it. What if you're the one who could make all the difference?
Best wishes, Denise
