New Approaches to Ending Homelessness: How Funders Can Help Reframe Efforts in a Time of Change
A recent AGF program at Encanto Pointe - Arizona's first-ever "Housing First" affordable housing community - provided an insight to the recent changes in HUD funding priorities and what this means for Arizona's homelessness assistance and housing programs. The panel addressed the new approaches to ending homelessness and how current systems need to change to take advantage of these new evidence-based practices. Video of the panel discussion is available.

A Day in the Life: Volunteers of Coconino County Jail 

"White cinder brick walls. Cement floors. Metal tables and chairs  bolted to the floor. Blue jumpsuits prevail behind locked doors that do not open for the residents. Grim times. But 15 inmates at the Coconino County Jail now have a program to help them through their stay and keep them from coming back. The program, started in February, is the Northern Arizona Education and Re-entry Program." Read more

Need an office? BHHS Legacy Foundation is looking for nonprofit leasing partners

BHHS Legacy Foundation is pleased to announce the purchase of a building at 360 E. Coronado, located in Central Phoenix to serve as a permanent residence for the Foundation. The Foundation staff and board of directors are interested in developing the remaining space as a nonprofit center for other nonprofit organizations. There are plans for a common community meeting space along with other amenities to be able to take advantage of collaboration and networking with other nonprofit organizations.

 

The building is currently undergoing renovation and is anticipated to be ready for move in by August or September of 2013.

Phoenix Suns Charities hands out scholarships
Phoenix Suns Charities awarded 17 scholarships totaling $37,000 to students across Arizona. One $5,000 scholarship was awarded to a student in Tucson, as well as the inaugural Be Great Today Scholarship. Additionally, 15 high school seniors won $2,000 scholarships as part of the Suns Charities' SunStudents Scholarship. Nearly 200 applicants were judged on community involvement, scholastic performance, letters of recommendation and an essay on overcoming adversity. Learn more.

Arizona Community Foundation Awards Nearly $10 Million in Grants

The Arizona Community Foundation has announced more than $9.9 million in discretionary and donor-advised grants and scholarship awards made during the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, which ended March 31. Nearly half of that ($4.9 million) was awarded in support of health innovations. In addition, the foundation announced education-related awards totaling more than $3.4 million, with an additional $193,071 in scholarships to individuals. And it awarded $561,533 in the area of arts and culture. Get all the details. 


Partnership grants $4 million for Valley animal-welfare
A charity partnership between PetSmart Charities and Nina Mason   Pulliam Charitable Trust will invest $4 million over the next three years in a focused effort to reduce the number of homeless cats and dogs Valley-wide and in specific ZIP codes. Eight Valley animal-welfare organizations will receive funding to provide 44,000 low- to no-cost pet-sterilization surgeries, increase adoption and fostering of 7,000 pets, and raise public awareness about shelter animals and sterilization.
