It can be hard to sleep when you are thousands of dollars under budget with no prospects on the horizon to fund valuable, critical community programs. But one lesson that is imperative to learn is that asking for the sake of asking can be detrimental to your request and a potential future relationship...

How Do Funders Determine Effective Programs?
A recent AGF program on Evidence-Based Practices gave us this valuable insight on what makes a good evaluation. Presenters Patsy Kraeger, Governor's Office of Children, Youth and Families; Bethany Miller, Helios Education Foundation; and Wayne Parker, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, shared their expertise in using evidence-based practices. The presentation described evidence-based interventions, identified approved sources of evidence, addressed finding proper evidence for unique interventions, and assessed the utility of evidence. Introducing "Corporate Corner" - an advice column from Arizona corporate grantmakers
We are introducing a new section to News & Notes! "Corporate Corner" will feature a different anonymous corporate funder each issue. They will offer advice and tips of the trade for working with corporate funders. Look for it in today's issue! Or click here to read "Sometimes It Hurts to Ask."
NEW resources on the Arizona philanthropic sector
AGF has developed three new, helpful resources to explain the scope of the Arizona nonprofit sector. The first is an infographic on the effects of the Charitable Giving Deduction in our state. The second is a fact sheet on Arizona philanthropy that shows where we rank nationally in both individual and formal giving. Finally, AGF has compiled examples of how the nonprofit sector has partnered with the public sector to produce results.
Aging in Arizona: A Summary of Arizona Grantmaker Perspectives
Arizona Grantmakers Forum (AGF) conducted a formative assessment of 30 Arizona-based funders to understand how they make funding decisions for the communities they serve; how they would envision improving Arizona communities to better support people of all ages; and how the rapidly growing segment of older adults might impact community building. The participants discussed their funding philosophies and how older adults factor into these, or not. This report summarizes the results of in-depth interviews and focus group sessions conducted in 2012 as part of the AGF Engagement Initiative. Access the full report. Research was conducted on behalf of AGF by Carolyn A. Holmes, MScN, PhD from Holmes Research & Consulting, LLC. Funding for this report was provided by Grantmakers in Aging, Arizona Community Foundation, BHHS Legacy Foundation, St. Luke's Health Initiative, Virginia G.Piper Charitable Trust
