Meet the LHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Say Hello to #1 and #2!

Valedictorian - Mark Buckup

Cumulative GPA: 123.84

Intended College: Stanford University

Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering

Buckup, son of Colin and Sandra Buckup, is the 2014-2015 LHS Valedictorian.

How will you change the world?

I initially need to pursue a field that kindles my flame. I am quite adamant that I am capable of changing the world, but the question of "in what field" is left for kismet to determine. I am passionate about physics, helping others, mathematics and a variety of other fields. I just have to experiment in college and discover my true passion that will revolutionize this world.

What are you most looking forward to at college?

College allows one to bloom. I will be able to plan my schedule accordingly with classes that pique interest to me and with activities that kindle my passion for helping others and the environment. I am most ecstatic for being able to control my life and being able to choose the course of action for my future. College is just another synonym for freedom.

What's the best advice you've received and from whom?

Natalie Minick, a family friend, once admitted to me that she did not plan how her summer would materialize. She tersely told me she was excited to live another day and determined to just have fun. She told me she would just "live." Now, as I have finished four years of rigorous AP classes and extracurricular activities in high school, I realize that what she told me is pure gold. The purpose of life is definitely to persevere and work hard, but also to just have fun.

Who has been your favorite teacher and why?

My 2nd grade teacher from Rockbrook Elementary, Mrs. Springer, holds the status as being my favorite teacher. She had bribed all her students to memorize poems to participate in the weekly "Friday Fun" activities and pushed us on numerous occasions with "Mad Minute" math challenges, rigorous writing and reading tests, and endless science experiments. She introduced me to the cryptic water -dwelling insects - "triops" - and made 2nd grade a year to remember. Much was accomplished and much was to be done; yet, at every moment, no one failed to smile. It was a year of jolly success.

What will you miss most about your hometown?

Lewisville is a town known for its history. It was one of the first to prosper in the region in the early 19th century and despite the urban sprawl, it's a welcoming community where many know one another. All in all, the most missed features will be the unpredictable Texas weather and the prideful people.

Salutatorian - Chidinma (Angela) Umeh

Cumulative GPA: 122.98

Intended College: Stanford University

Intended Majors: Energy, Resources and Engineering

Umeh, daughter of Charles and Bernice Umeh, is the 2014-2015 LHS Salutatorian.

How will you change the world?

The world will become a much more sustainable and logical place if I have any say.

What are you most looking forward to at college?

Like everyone else, I'm looking forward to being independent and living my own life. Up until now, so much of my life has been decided for me. It will be nice to be able to decide for myself.

What's the best advice you've received and from whom?

My first week at my current job, I was trying to put clothes back in the right place, but I was very confused. I asked a co-worker for help, and she told me that I would never figure it out unless I tried on my own. I was so frustrated and annoyed that I sought to be the best, pushing me to work harder. So the idea is that sometimes you have to be your own hero.

Who has been your favorite teacher and why?

Mrs. Bang, who was my kindergarten teacher at Creekside Elementary. She fostered my young thirst for knowledge by praising the nonsensical and unnecessary extra credit projects I assigned to myself. I was really shy and anxious when I was younger, but she made me feel like I would be okay. I even wrote to her for some time after she moved to Rhode Island when I advanced to 1st grade. Not many teachers stay in touch, but she did.

What will you miss most about your hometown?

I'm going to miss the free ticket to the State Fair of Texas the most. No one has a fair like Texas, and I won't be able to go for at least four years.

80th Annual Rosecutting
Class of 2015 Follows in Footsteps of Generations of Farmers

Photo Gallery

LHS held its 80th annual Rosecutting Ceremony May 19 at Leo C. Stuver Auditorium. The tradition began with the class of 1935. The class of 2015 was proud and enthusiastic as they followed in the footsteps of generations of Farmers before them.

"It was an honor to lead the Class of 2015 in our 80th annual Rosecutting," LHS Student Body President Madalene Hernandez said. "It's definitely always an overwhelming joy to be able to continue our Lewisville High School traditions and show Farmer Pride!"

Rosecutting is an event carefully choreographed to symbolize the value placed on the friendships and experiences that bond students with their friends, even as they break that bond to begin new chapters in their lives beyond high school.

During the ceremony, each member of the class is given a rose and it is attached to a continuous maroon ribbon, showing their connection with their classmates. Then, each student cuts the ribbon to free his or her rose in the formal and emotional ceremony.

Dear Future Farmers
Seniors Share Advice with Future LHS Students

Not long ago, we were students at schools you now attend.
Here's a few thoughts of what exactly it means to be a Farmer. Good luck!
- LHS Senior Class 2015

"High School can be scary but if you put yourself out there and speak up when

you're supposed to, you can go a long way! Also, try not to be involved in everything.

Take it slow. Try a new club each week."

- Roberto Arellano

"Get involved. Four years in high school is way too short to not get involved. Since there are over 60 clubs, success is at the top of your fingertips just waiting for you to reach out and grab it.

Each club has a unique opportunity. What comes with the overall mission of a club is just the start; you become more socially involved, better equipped for future jobs, gain respect as a leader

and become more likely to succeed!"

- Carissa Baker

"Enjoy every moment of high school and take your grades seriously."

- Alexus Brown

"Everything starting from right now counts towards your future. If I could go back and give my middle school self three tips for high school they would be: Academics need to be your first priority. You might not know what college you want to attend or what you want to do in the future but by doing well your freshman, sophomore and junior year, you're guaranteeing yourself a solid, successful future with options; ENJOY EVERY SINGLE DAY. Get involved in school. Get to know different people. Surround yourself with good, hardworking people. Those people are the ones that will make you succeed and will be happy to see you succeed; and you will loose friends - a lot of them, perhaps all of them - but remember it is all for the best. You will make new friends. You will meet so many people throughout high school that it won't matter. Make sure you choose your friends wisely. Finally, enjoy high school! It will flash before your eyes and you want to be able to look back at it as some of the greatest years of your life. High school makes you understand who you are and who you will become. Stay kind, hopeful and never lose sight on what's important."

- Araceli Castillo

"Have fun, enjoy yourself and don't be afraid to step out and try something new!"

- Madalene Hernandez

"I would tell them to always try no matter what. You will never know your full abilities until you challenge them. No matter what people say, you are the only person who controls who you will become in life. If someone tells you that you won't make it, prove them WRONG."

- Brittany Marshall

"If it's not classy, then don't do it. Choose your friends carefully because you become what they are. Be a master of your habits or they'll master you. Stand for something or you could fall for anything. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY because you don't know it as well as you think you do."

- Janae Park

"Challenge yourself and don't be afraid to try new clubs and organizations

because you just might find something you're truly passionate about."

- Alyssa Ramirez

"Have fun and enjoy your high school days because you don't get to have them back.

Focus on school and never give up on something you want only because others are judging you. Always know that once you're a Fighting Farmer you'll never leave the family."

- Brenda Rios

"Avoid all drama. It makes everything easier!"

- Holly Weston

"Focus early. Colleges look back all the way to your freshman year. Stay focused

on everything - grades, behavior, work ethic and athletics - from the first day of 9th grade

to the last day of 12th grade. Do that and you will for sure see great results!"

- Kori Williams
