Women in IT Program Visits McKamy
Eighth Grade Girls Learn About Technical Career Opportunities

McKamy Middle School 8th grade girls recently participated in a special assembly to learn more about career opportunities in technology thanks to Citi's"Women in IT" program.

The program was brought to MMS by parent and Citi employee Shannon McMullen.

According to McMullen, Women in IT was influenced by organizations such as
Girls Who Code and She++, and launched in response to a few statistics:

  • Since 1984, the percentage of female computer science graduates has dropped from 37 percent to 12 percent
  • Women make up more than half of the U.S. workforce, but hold just 25 percent of the jobs in technical or computing fields
  • By 2020, the IT sector will add nearly 1.4 million job openings, but compared to a projection of only 400,000 computer science students, more than 2/3 of those jobs could go unfilled
"These numbers highlight the talent gap and immense opportunity ahead of our nation's students - particularly females," McMullen said. "Our goal with this initiative is to inspire more middle and high school girls to consider careers in technology."

Garden Ridge Cents

Second Graders Learn About U.S. Currency

"Penny, penny easily spent. Copper, brown and worth one cent..."

Second graders at Garden Ridge Elementary put their minds together to use their math skills and learn more about money after an engaging lesson on U.S. currency.

To begin the lesson, teacher Emily Anderson taught students to identify coins by looking at their face and color. Then, they worked in small groups and solved riddles and sorted coins by type: quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.

Building off of that knowledge, her students learned to add coins together and then after that, the students took their knowledge and pretended to be a banker and count money while Anderson read Stuart J. Murphy's "The Penny Pot" - a MathStart book about a little girl who would love to have her face painted at the school fair and sets up a penny pot to collect spare change to pay for the 50 cents to paint her face.

Principal Profile: Tim Greenwell

Meet Liberty Elementary's Principal

Check out the profile about Liberty Elementary Principal Tim Greenwell, who discusses his favorite thing about his job; what he enjoys doing in his spare time; and gives some advice to someone who is interested in becoming a principal.

Lewisville ISD (LISD): What has been the most valuable lesson you have learned as a principal?

Tim Greenwell (TG): Motivation and collaboration. As principal, you are the person to set and maintain the tone for your campus. However, you are not alone in doing so if you positively motivate all other stakeholders through collaboration of the details and decision making about the teaching and learning; activities and events; providing authentic life experiences; and creating opportunities for lasting memories.

LISD: What is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in Lewisville ISD?

TG: I am always growing, learning and changing as a person and professional. Our district challenges us to be ongoing, lifelong learners while encouraging us to have autonomy in our professional learning choices, leadership opportunities and individual personalities.

LISD: What is something that most would not know about you?

TG: My first teaching position was at the age of eight while living in Virginia when my parents nurtured a budding, future educator by setting up a classroom in the garage of our home complete with chalkboard, desks and activity books. I held class after the regular school day with other neighborhood kids. After completing a couple of activities, we would adjourn to recess, which included playing up and down the streets and in the moat behind our houses until dinner was ready or darkness fell and the streetlights came on outside.

LISD: What do you like to do in your spare time?

TG: A lifelong activity for me is swimming. As a kid, I was a competitive swimmer and as an adult, I swim for exercise with a goal to complete one mile at least five times each week. Since moving to Texas several years ago, I have enjoyed time with my family, particularly attending the activities of my nieces and nephews who have grown up in the Marcus High School feeder pattern. Other interests include: attending live theatre and musical performances; watching and/or being at college football games; experiencing cultural events; reading; travel; and time with my loving dogs.

LISD: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a principal or entering the education field?

TG: Take every negative experience or example put upon you in the past and do the exact opposite so that you create positive experiences and memories for students, their families and colleagues. Leading by positive example will ignite the efforts of others, creating a culture of belonging that, in turn, provides an educational environment you and all stakeholders can be proud of and celebrate.

Stay tuned for our next Principal Profile, published on LISD.net every Friday morning. See all the profiles here. #LISDprofile

Garden Ridge Selected as Mystery Class Video
For the past 10 years, Garden Ridge Elementary students in Christine Rountree's class have been participating in Journey North's Mystery Class -- a program/game for students to use sunrise and sunset times to determine the photoperiod (elapsed time) of a mystery location. This year, Garden Ridge was selected as on of the mystery classes. Check out their rap video here. Overall, the information collected helps students determine if the mystery class in located in the northern or southern hemisphere. Once the longitude clue is released, students are able to calculate the approximate longitude line and know if it is in the eastern or western hemisphere. Then for four weeks, they receive clues about the location of the mystery city. Ultimately, this is a great activity to work on geography, math and science skills. The class locations change each year and the teacher does not know the correct cities. To learn more about Journey North, click here. Great job, Garden Ridge students!
