One Big Day. One Big Thanks. One Big Event.
Lewisville ISD's East Zone Hosts Cross-Feeder Service Day

Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give."

More than 2,700 students and staff members from both the Hebron High School and The Colony High School feeder patterns - all the schools in Lewisville ISD's East Zone - gave back to their communities on March 21 as part of the East Zone's inaugural service activity, "The Big Event."

A spin-off of Texas A&M University's annual service event with the same name, The Big Event promoted campus and community unity through service-oriented activities as students the East Zone came together for one day to express their gratitude for the support from their communities.

"I'm beyond amazed at the number of volunteers who came together to give back to our communities to say 'thank you' to those who support us daily," LISD East Zone Leader Leigh Ann Lewis said. "I'm so proud to be a part of the East Zone."

The Big Event is different from other service projects because it is not based on socioeconomic need. The event was an outlet for the entire East Zone to express their gratitude to residents who support them by attending events, supporting the continued education of students and donating time and money to East Zone schools, and this was a way to give back and say "thank you."

Across the East Zone, schools and students worked in cross-feeder groups to complete more than 80 different service activities, including making sandwiches for the Salvation Army; partnering with LISDOLA to clean up trash and clear trails; collecting and sorting food at Metrocrest; working in campus gardens; singing songs at nursing homes; and partnering with Operation Kindness, among many other activities.

"A homeowner told me, 'It would have taken me more than a year to do what y'all accomplished today,'" HHS Assistant Principal Dedrick Buckels said.

"I'm thankful and blessed to work with so many who care about our school and community," TCHS Principal James Hill said.

It's important to remember The Big Event isn't about the number of jobs completed or the number of participants. Instead, it is the interaction between students and residents and the unity that results throughout the community that makes The Big Event such a unique project.

Indian Creek Elementary Introduces Student Clubs
Community Club Helps Give Back to School

Philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, "What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?"

Third graders in the Community Club at Indian Creek Elementary are spending their year doing just that - being kind and serving their community.

This school year, ICE started student clubs as an enriching activity for all students. Each grade level has a number of clubs students can choose from, each led by a teacher. From Young Engineers to Crafty Kids to Sign Language to Fitness to Community and everything in between - students can find a club tailored to their interests and join in on the fun.

"Our clubs are designed to create something our normal school day can't create," ICE Principal Amy Teddy said. "They are truly student-driven."

FAME

HHS' HOSA President, Abhipsa Das, has been admitted to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Health Science Center Facilitated Admission to Medical Education (FAME) program. FAME is a joint BS/MD program where students graduate with both their Bachelor's and their Medical degree in seven years. Students are, in essence, admitted into medical school straight from high school. Only 20 students a year are accepted, and they have their own floor in the Honors Hall at UTSA so they can collaborate on the incredibly rigorous course and clinical work.

Even more incredibly, HHS 9's HOSA President from last year, Farhan Ahmad, was admitted to the FAME program last year! Out of 40 students who joined the program over the two-year period, HHS will have two FAME students.
