Shadow Ridge, Briarhill Middle Schools Hang Out
Teachers Collaborate About Different Online Resources for the Classroom

Education author Robert John Meehan said, "The most valuable resource that all teachers have is each other. Without collaboration, our growth is limited to our own perspectives."

During the course of one day, Shadow Ridge Middle School (SRMS) and Briarhill Middle School (BMS) teachers and Lewisville ISD (LISD) Design Coaches came together via Google Hangouts - an online video/presentation collaborative resource - to learn more and share their ideas about connecting across campuses to enhance student work utilizing an outside audience via online tools such as Google Hangouts, Google Blogger, FaceTime, Skype and Twitter. It was a day for teachers to learn something new thanks to the help of LISD Design Coaches, who shared the best ways for teachers to give students learning experiences outside the classroom walls.

"Google Hangouts was new for a large majority of the teachers," BMS Library Media Specialist Tela Weesner said. "I heard one teacher discussing how she will use Google Hangouts for a virtual visit with a college admissions counselor. When asked 'Why Google Hangouts?', she said she wanted other classes to join in, but it has been difficult to find a place where several classes could watch at the same time. Using this platform allows other teachers the ability to join the hangout from their classrooms."

Stayin' Alive

Liberty Elementary 5th Graders Learn Valuable Life Saving Skills

"Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive..."

Most know these lyrics from the Bee Gees' famous hit song "Stayin' Alive," but Liberty Elementary 5th graders know more than just the lyrics - they now know how to save a life to the beat of them.

During their scheduled physical education time, Liberty nurse Lori Heffernan volunteered her time to teach every 5th grader how to perform hands-on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and even how to locate and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

"I've seen during an emergency situation, how people don't help because they are afraid to do the wrong thing," Heffernan said. "But I feel this training will help our students learn to do something and help any way that they can."

Principal Profile: Dr. Robin Macke

Meet Wellington Elementary's Principal

Check out the profile about Wellington Elementary Principal Dr. Robin Macke, who discusses her favorite thing about her job; what she enjoys doing in her spare time; and gives some advice to someone who is interested in becoming a principal.

Lewisville ISD (LISD): What has been the most valuable lesson you have learned as a principal?

Dr. Macke (DM): There is an old saying that reflects upon the idea that children rarely do what you say, but often do what you do. I believe the same is true for any leader of an organization of adults, as well. Learning that over the years has been a valuable lesson for both my professional and private lives. Principals have off days like anyone else, but my passion and positive energy for my school and district needs to be 100 percent reliable for those whom I serve. My staff and students need and deserve a leader who will consistently lift them up and believe in them. If that doesn't happen as a leader, a less appealing old saying comes into play, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." Principals need to be a source of "happy" others can tap into when they need it.

LISD: What is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in Lewisville ISD?

DM: There are many things that would compete for the title of "favorite." We have amazing educators throughout our district and awesome parents who step up to the plate and work hard with us to achieve the vision of the district. My favorite thing has to be the students, though. There's nothing quite like watching a five-year-old grow and learn over the years and move on to middle school as a strong, competent and caring young man or lady.

LISD: What is something that most would not know about you?

DM: My husband and I met as performers at a historical recreation of King Henry VIII's times, otherwise known as Scarborough Renaissance Faire. We had a band performing there under the name of "Barleycorn."

LISD: What do you like to do in your spare time?

DM: I enjoy playing music with my husband and kids, doing artwork and reading. We also enjoy getting outside and hiking/camping.

LISD: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a principal or entering the education field?

DM: Be prepared to change. Our world is a fast-paced place and our role is to prepare our students to be successful in that environment. As educators, we must be willing and able to constantly monitor the global environment and adjust our experiences for our students. It's a great profession, but it won't be the same profession when you ultimately retire as it was when you started.

McKamy's Sandbox

MMS 7th grade science classes recently participated in a lab activity called "Sand Land," an experiment for students to investigate how a catastrophic event such as a flood impacted weathering, erosion and deposition on the Earth's surface. For the experiment, students built land formations and used a spray bottle to make it "rain" in their sandbox at a low, medium and high intensity while recording their observations about what happened to the rain, as well as the sand. Students would record numerous observations such as absorbency, puddled and runoff just to name a few. After the simulation, we applied it to the real-world references by discussing what they saw in their our own neighborhoods when rain was light, medium or heavy. Next, students were asked to brainstorm how they could model weathering, erosion and deposition using their sandbox and water. In the end, students had fun testing their ideas in the sandbox and 7th grade science teacher Michelle Moreland had fun cleaning sand off tables and chairs for a while! See more photos from this learning opportunity on MMS' Facebook page here
