Hebron High School "Blocks" Lunch
Students Provided Opportunity to Study, Attend Tutorials and Participate in Clubs During Lunch Hour
When the bell rings for lunch at Hebron High School (and Hebron 9th Grade Campus), hundreds of students are set free to take care of business. Most educators would be terrified of this idea, but not HHS Principal Scot Finch and his team.
Instead of a structured 25-minute lunch, HHS and HHS 9 students have an hour to eat, study and/or participate in a variety of staff-monitored clubs and activities; it's called "Block Lunch." The hour is divided into two 30-minute blocks of time during which tutorials are held and clubs meet.
HHS administrators learned about the concept by visiting other Lewisville ISD campuses who utilize Block Lunch, including Lewisville High School. Intrigued, the HHS team headed to the campuses to see for themselves how it worked, as well as learn from fellow LISD students, staff and administrators.
"Block Lunch has been a great way for our students to get more plugged in," HHS Assistant Principal Jacob Garlinger said. "From the tutoring sessions offered to the opportunities to be a part of just about any club on campus, it's worked well in giving students more choice in their school day and opportunities to be successful."

Polser Elementary Students Learn About Fractions via Keynote on iPads
United States Founding Father Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."
Third grade students in Lakeshia Spiller's class at Polser Elementary were recently involved in their learning about fractions when the school's librarian, Bethany Brant, partnered with Spiller to integrate math and technology in the classroom.
Working together, Brant and Spiller developed an introductory lesson about fractions that married math and technology. One Monday, Brant came into Spiller's classroom and taught students about fractions with a Keynote presentation she built on her iPad. The next day, they reviewed the previous day's lesson and learned how to use the Keynote app themselves to create presentations about the different ways to show fractions.
Find out more about this lesson here. For more photos, click here.

Principal Profile: Hebron High School
Meet Scot Finch
Check out the profile about Hebron High School Principal Scot Finch, who discusses his favorite thing about his job; what he enjoys doing in his spare time; and gives some advice to someone who is interested in becoming a principal.
Lewisville ISD (LISD): What has been the most valuable lesson you have learned as principal?
Scot Finch (SF): All students want a mentor relationship with a teacher, coach or director more than anything. I've seen it save numerous lives. Also, at-risk students really do care and want to succeed.
LISD: What is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in LISD?
SF: Leading and serving at the same time. That is, attempting to be a positive influence on students, staff and parents.
LISD: What is something that most would not know about you?
SF: During the early years of my life (through 1st grade), I lived in a 1950s model mobile home.
LISD: What do you like to do in your spare time?
SF: When I have spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends.
LISD: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a principal or entering the education field?
SF: You will need to work hard, serve others, have a backbone, be humble and be willing to lead. As John Wayne said, "Courage is being afraid, but saddling up anyway." It is one of the most exhausting and intense professions, but the rewards are great in the lives you will change.
