It Just Takes One to Change the World
Arbor Creek Middle School Students Participate in PBL Activity

Michael Jackson sang in 1991: "Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me."

Eighth graders in Valayne May's class at Arbor Creek Middle School recently completed a project-based learning (PBL) activity on just that: making the world a better place.

For the past nine weeks, students worked on the PBL that asked the driving question, "How can I change the world?"

"I gave the students that overarching question, and they were charged with thinking about it and creating a project over it," May said. "They had to come up with a plan and implement it, creating a project about how they would change the world. They were given free rein!"

Some students created videos, while others created slideshows, and others created poster boards with Quick Response (QR) codes embedded on the page.

Find out what the students did for the project here. View more photos here.

Do You Want to Build a Snowman?
Hebron Valley Elementary Pre-K, PPCD Class Learns About Seasons with Snowmen

As Anna so famously sang in "Frozen": "Do you want to build a snowman?"

The Pre-K and PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities) "Pups," as they're affectionately called, at Hebron Valley Elementary are following in Anna's footsteps by building their very own snowmen while studying a unit about the four seasons.

To start the lesson, Pups teacher Dawn Coker discussed how snow does not stay the same since it turns into a different property when it melts.

"We also discussed what we think snowmen do at night, brainstorming ideas of what we thought they did," Coker said.

Then, they read the book "Snowmen at Night" by Caralyn Buehner - a story about the secret life of snowmen - and added their thoughts to the class Thinking Map, a system of diagrammatic thinking.
