Held Captive
Freshmen Create Dystopian Societies for Project-Based Learning Ray Bradbury famously penned, "We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?"
Flower Mound 9th Grade Campus students have been bothered - bothered by a dystopia they need to fix, that is. After reading Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel, "Fahrenheit 451," students in Angie Greenlaw and Kristine Williams' Humanities classes have been put to the test to create a dystopia - an imagined place or state in which everything unpleasant or bad takes over society - for a project-based learning (PBL) opportunity teachers have coined as, "Held Captive." The driving question - "How do we as a society prevent tyrannical actions by powerful institutions?"
After reading the book, students researched different children's books that have been censored or banned. Then they set up a pretend radio show, where they each called in to argue for or against censoring some of these books. In addition, Lewisville ISD Superintendent Dr. Stephen F. Waddell visited with students to share his experience about challenged books in the school system and the district's protocol for removing books from its libraries. To continue the PBL, students were challenged to create a dystopian society of their choice and then create a children's book with their district-issued iPads (via LISD's 1:X initiative) to share with Liberty Elementary 4th graders during their field trip to FM 9.

Flower Mound 9th Grade Student Shares Gaming Knowledge with 5th Graders
"This is the most fun I've had all year!" and "I love this! It's so cool," are just a few of the exclamations Forest Vista Elementary students in Laura Lane's Gifted and Talented (GT) class were saying after a engaging lesson about making video games taught by Flower Mound 9th Grade Campus student Michael Schott.
When Lane learned about Pixel Press Floors - an application that allows users to create video games by simply using an iPad or pencil their game on special graph paper downloaded from its website - she knew it would ignite student excitement and engagement, but needed someone to help her test it out first. Therefore, she decided to pitch it to a FM 9 student.
Once Schott explored the application, he prepared a lesson with the intent of not only sharing the "how to" of Pixel Press Floors, but also modeling the "how to teach others." "Michael's positive communication skills had students excited from the very beginning," Lane said. "His quick engagement brought to mind an opportunity for both new technology skills and peer modeling/coaching." Using district-issued iPads, thanks to LISD's 1:X initiative, students created and played their own games with the application.
