When I Grow Up...
Hebron 9th Grade Campus Students Present Career Research Project

Author Sylvia Plath wrote in "The Bell Jar": "When they asked me what I wanted to be, I said I didn't know."

Ninth graders at Hebron 9th Grade Campus won't have an issue discovering what they want to be one day, thanks to a recent career project.

Dec. 5, more than 150 students from 11 different Reading and English I classes at HHS 9 came together for a presentation to culminate their month-long unit about future careers.

During the unit, students in Birdie Brazil, Kathryn Gaughan, Kathleen Linch and Marc Vanzant's classes looked at their personality types and how that correlates with the career field they should one day enter. Students met once a week for nearly two hours, where they had the time and resources to explore various career descriptions, career income levels, percentages of projected job growth and the education necessary to obtain those careers. Once they researched what education level is required for the career of their interest, they researched the colleges or trade schools available to them, as well as tuition costs and entrance requirements.

Find out more about this engaging lesson, including what students had to say about it, here. View more photos here.

e-What?
Polser Elementary Fifth Graders Create e-Portfolios

Dec. 9, Polser Elementary 5th graders began work on their e-Portfolios - a digital collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user that serves as a platform for self-expression. These e-Portfolios are a place for students to demonstrate their abilities over time.

During the day, Polser Library Media Specialist Bethany Brant taught students to use their own Google accounts to create their individual e-Portfolios using Lewisville ISD (LISD)'s template. Polser is one of a few LISD campuses piloting the e-Portfolio program this year, which is being implemented thanks to LISD's East Zone Assistant Principals' Committee, who researched, collaborated and presented e-Portfolios during the 2013-2014 school year.

e-Portfolios engage learners through the use of technological tools to access, create and share content. Students can share their work with family members living in another state; look at assignments developed a few grades ago; and even use them when applying for colleges and technical schools to show their learning and growth through the years.

Learn more about the e-Portfolios here. Check out pictures here.

Lewisville ISD Announces New Polser Elementary Principal
Adam Gray to Succeed Robin Fry as Principal

At the Dec. 8 Board of Trustees meeting, Lewisville ISD (LISD) announced the appointment of Adam Gray as the new Principal of Polser Elementary, effective immediately. He is succeeding Robin Fry, who was recently named LISD's Health and Physical Education Coordinator.

"I'm thrilled and very thankful to have the opportunity to work with the students, staff and families of Polser Elementary," Gray said. "Student success is the heart of what makes Polser a great school. Advancing that success even further will be our daily mission."

Gray currently serves as an Assistant Principal at Peters Colony Elementary (PCE), where he has been since 2011 and is known for his strong and positive relationships with students and families, his work on LISD's 1:X initiative and his dedication to standards-based, innovative instruction. Last year, Gray was recognized as LISD's Assistant Principal of the Year for his contributions to PCE.

He began his career with LISD in 2008 as a 3rd grade Bilingual teacher at Hedrick Elementary, where he later served as Assistant Principal. Prior to joining LISD, Gray served as a 1st grade teacher in Concepción, Chile; a 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Bilingual teacher with Washington, D.C. Public Schools; a university professor in Hirakata, Japan; and a 3rd grade Bilingual teacher with Castleberry ISD in Castleberry, Texas.

"I am excited about Adam's appointment as the new Polser Principal," LISD East Zone Leader Leigh Ann Lewis said. "His strong work ethic and passion for students and their success will be a great asset to Polser."

Gray received his Bachelors in English Literature from The Ohio State University, a Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from American University, and a Masters in Educational Leadership and Policy from The University of Texas at Arlington. Gray and his wife, Katty are the proud parents of Iliana, who attends an LISD school, and Alex, who will attend next year.
