LISD Cuts Ribbon for Westside Aquatic Center

Farmers Swimming and Diving Athletes Call State-of-the-Art Facility Home

Lewisville ISD celebrated its brand new, $22 million, state-of-the-art Westside Aquatic Center with a ribbon cutting Sept. 30. The event featured performances from Lewisville, Flower Mound and Marcus High School swimming and diving athletes.

"To be able to show off such a wonderful facility and elite athletes to our administration and community was truly an experience beyond words," Facility Director and Marcus High School head coach Shannon Gillespy said. "My favorite part was watching the facial expressions as guests walked in the door - true 'mouth dropping' expressions."

Among guests in attendance were LISD Board of Trustees members, LISD Leadership members, State Representative Ron Simmons, Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce President Ray Hernandez, Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce President Lori Walker, principals, coaches, parents and local media.

Avery Johnson Visits Huffines, DeLay Middle School
Former NBA Star Player, Coach Encourages Students to Say Yes to Dreams

Former National Basketball Association standout player and head coach Avery Johnson stopped by Huffines and DeLay Middle School Sept. 24 to speak for the "Just Say YES - Youth Equipped to Succeed" program.

Johnson, who is currently an NBA analyst for ESPN, spoke to each school's entire student body about saying yes to dreams and goals and no to destructive choices. He also reminded the students about middle school being one the best times of their lives and the importance of having a super attitude and being a superb student. Johnson said the message he wanted to get across was clear.

"I just wanted to share with them that they are special," he said. "I was looking at somebody who was special, and their friends were looking at somebody who was special. The main thing is, special people are coachable; they compete, they really care about their bodies, they care about making their parents and teachers happy, they pick the right circle of friends and they pay attention."
