FMHS Physics Students Go Up
Students Ride Campus Elevator to Test Newton's Second Law of Motion

As Willy Wonka said, "An elevator can only go up and down, but the Wonkavator can go sideways, slantways, longways and backways...Just press the button, and zing you are off!"

Flower Mound High School Advanced Placement (AP) Physics students may not being going sideways or slantways, but for a recent class experiment, they had the opportunity to zing in the campus elevator to learn more about Isaac Newton's Second Law of Motion - the net force of an object is equal to the rate of change.

"The one good thing about this experiment is that it covers a lot of things and students learn it is not the normal force or the gravitational force that is affecting the acceleration of the elevator, but that it is the net force that affects the acceleration," FMHS science teacher Anne Wilhite said. "Plus, students get the chance to get out of the classroom and apply what they learn using a real-world application."

Forest Vista's Curious Scientists

First Graders Use Quick Response Codes to Examine Tools.

Recently, 1st graders in Lisa Steele's class at Forest Vista Elementary could be found exploring science tools, but in a fun and engaging way.

To learn more about what tools the class will use throughout the year for science experiments, Steele's students used iPads, thanks to LISD's 1:X initiative, to scan QR (quick response) codes to instantly learn more about thermometers, beakers, magnifying glasses, etc.

"We wanted to give students time to explore science tools and be able to identify a tool saying its name when I showed it to them," Steele said.

After reviewing each tool, students discussed its uses and how different scientists use them for different purposes. Students quickly noted the differences and similarities between the tools to items they use at home.

"My mom loves to use measuring cups when she cooks," student Lilly Blackmon said.

"That's not the kind of thermometer I put in my mouth when I am sick," student Luke Cole said.

"My favorite part was watching the facial expressions as guests walked in the door - true 'mouth dropping' expressions."

Among guests in attendance were LISD Board of Trustees members, LISD Leadership members, State Representative Ron Simmons, Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce President Ray Hernandez, Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce President Lori Walker, principals, coaches, parents and local media.
