Harmon Students Get Unique Prospective on 9/11
University of North Texas History Professor Speaks at Assembly

Photo Gallery

University of North Texas Associate Professor of Middle Eastern History Dr. Nancy L. Stockdale spoke to Lewisville High School-Harmon 10th grade AP World History students on Sept. 11, providing a unique look into United States and Middle Eastern relations before and after the tragic day of Sept. 11, 2001.

"I wanted the students to get a larger historical context for not just 9/11, but the pre- and post-history of 9/11 in the Middle East and the United States," Stockdale said. "There is a future being created and we are all in a position where we can shape it to be more positive or more negative."

The crowd of more than 250 students found the assembly, which included numerous photos and a question-and-answer session at the end, extremely informative.

"Hearing Dr. Stockdale was very beneficial and eye-opening for all of us because our age does not really know much about a pre-9/11 society," student Madison Lopez said.

Rachel's Challenge Visits Durham Middle School
Students Vow to Start Chain Reaction of Kindness and Compassion

Photo Gallery

Rachel's Challenge shared its story throughout Durham Middle School Sept. 12 with a pair of assemblies and a training program.

Presented David Hills was on campus to share the story and writings of 17-year-old Rachel Scott, who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., on April 20, 1999.

Scott was known for reaching out to those who were different, picked on and new to her school. Shorty before Scott's death, she wrote, "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same."

Hills said the message he wanted to get across to DMS students was clear.

"The message was about kindness and compassion," presenter David Hills said. "Our belief is that one small act of kindness, like Rachel said, can make a huge impact. How we treat each other is what it all boils down to."

Lewisville Learning AND Writing Center
Staff Members Biggs-Scribner, Johnson, Smith, Swilley all Published Authors

Some people stand in line for hours just to meet an author and have their book signed. Luckily for students at Lewisville Learning Center, published authors are on campus every single school day.

Middle school Language Arts/Reading teacher Stephanie Biggs-Scribner, Assistant Principal Dr. Rayetta Johnson, high school English/Journalism teacher Karen Smith and high school Social Studies teacher Charles Swilley all have written books which are available for purchase on Amazon.com.

LLC Principal Kecia Theodore has seen her staff members' accomplishments translate to added success in the classroom.

"By sharing their works with students, each of our published authors share a bit of themselves which is vital in forming meaningful relationships with students," Theodore said. "The LLC is where great minds create a positive and supportive environment for great minds to thrive."

Lewisville Learning Center Principal Profile

Meet Kecia Theodore

Check out the profile about Lewisville Learning Center first-year principal Kecia Theodore, who discusses her favorite thing about her job; what she enjoys doing in her spare time; and dishes some advice to someone who is interested in becoming a principal.

Lewisville ISD (LISD): What has the experience been like thus far as the new Lewisville Learning Center Principal?

Kecia Theodore (KT): I am humbled by the welcome I have received from students, parents and staff.  Although I am new to Lewisville ISD, there are countless people that have gone out of their way to make me feel at home. The support has been amazing and I look for more great things to come. While the school year has just begun, two teachers have welcomed new babies and I will be extending congratulations to four students for meeting the requirements for graduation or completing coursework. You can only experience this type of joy and excitement so early in the year at Lewisville Learning Center.

LISD: What is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in LISD?

KT: Beginning with the Visioning Conference and continuing through this summer's Leadership Conference, I have been challenged like never before. I have been exposed to new thinking, processes and technology all related to Strategic Design. The concept of being a learning leader is real in LISD and I love the support that comes along with the ideas and process.

LISD: What is something that most would not know about you?

KT: I am a first generation college graduate and graduated at the top of my class from Grambling State University. I eat kale or seaweed almost every day for lunch. I have not cut my hair in nine and a half years.

LISD: What do you like to do in your spare time?

KT: I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and daughter. I was a Geography teacher, so I love to travel. My favorite getaway is the Caribbean. The majority of my "spare time" is mommy time; volleyball practice, music lessons, etc. I also like to run and aspire to complete a marathon in the near future.

LISD: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a principal or entering the education field?

KT: Enter with an open-mind and an open heart. Make all decisions in the best interest of kids and you can never go wrong. This is truly the greatest profession in the world; we have the awesome task of preparing the next generation to take their place in society.

Stay tuned for our next Principal Profile, published on LISD.net every Friday morning. One principal per zone will be featured each week. See all the archives. #LISDprofile

LHS, Marcus High School Support Local Veterans During "Battle of the Axe" Week

Overall, the campaign was able to raise approximately $3,000. In addition, the schools recognized its local veterans during a special ceremony honoring them on the field prior to the football game. Hedrick Middle School Launches School-Wide 40 Book Challenge for Teachers

In order to have the opportunity to connect with their inner-reader and each other to expose students to authentic excitement about reading, Hedrick Middle School teachers have launched their own 40 Book Challenge. The idea, which includes completing the challenge in one school year, was concocted by 6th grade English Language Arts teachers Julia McCloud and Michelle Furr. Ultimately, they wanted students to see their teachers as readers and know that HMS values reading and supports reading goals. Furr designed and placed 40 Book Challenge pledge posters around campus for students and staff members to sign. She also created tracking sheets for books read. Teachers are hanging "I'm Currently Reading..." signs on their doors to support the imitative. McCloud is developing a launch kit in case other schools are interested. To contact her, email [email protected].
