Tomkovich Represents Lewisville High School
on National Merit Finalist List
Senior Passionate about Academics, Credits LISD Schools
Entering his senior year at Lewisville High School (LHS), Alexander Tomkovich had three academic goals: be valedictorian, make over a 2,300 on the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) and become a National Merit Scholarship Program® (NMSP) finalist. Two down. One to go. Most recently, Tomkovich received word he was in fact a 2013-14 National Merit finalist. "I was really happy when I found out," said Tomkovich, who scored a 2,370 on the SAT earlier this year. "I've been in a Preliminary SAT class this year and took a lot of practice tests to help me prepare for the NMSP." Tomkovich is one of 15,000 high school students across the United States to receive the finalist honor. More specifically, he is one of 68 to be recognized from across Lewisville ISD - and the only representative from LHS.

Third-, Fourth-, Fifth-Grade Students Experience Big Stage
Watch the Performance
Not only did a group of 25 Vickery Elementary (Vickery) students get to experience a NBA Development League game, they were part of the experience. After arriving early to go through a professional sound check, the Vickery choir had their voices heard by a crowd of 5,913 - the largest audience they have ever sang to. Durham Middle School Principal Profile
Check out the profile about Durham Middle School (Durham) principal Brian McCoo, who discusses his favorite thing about his job; what he enjoys doing in his spare time; and dishes some advice to someone who is interested in becoming a principal. McCoo is in his second year as a principal at Durham.
Lewisville ISD (LISD): What has been the most valuable lesson you have learned as a principal?
Brian McCoo (BM): The most valuable lesson I have learned comes from what I see every day in our students, parents and teachers. Greatness and success are achieved through hard work and determination.
LISD: What is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in Lewisville ISD?
BM: My favorite thing about my job as an educator is the opportunity to work with students and teachers and being part of their development. I also enjoy that no day is ever the same and each morning when I arrive at school, new challenges are presented.
LISD: What is something that most would not know about you?
BM: Most people do not know that I am a graduate of Lewisville High School and attended Hedrick Middle School.
LISD: What do you like to do in your spare time?
BM: I spend most of my spare time with my wife and two children, who are participating in sports. My weekends are filled with volleyball, basketball and soccer. I also read science fiction and have taken up jogging.
LISD: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a principal or entering the education field?
BM: My advice for those who are entering education is to utilize collaboration. So much has changed in education that the most important skill now is the ability to collaborate with others. Education cannot be addressed by one person; it takes a group or team of students, parents, community and other educators to stay on the cutting-edge of the changes in today's society.
Stay tuned for our next Principal Profile, published on LISD.net every Friday morning. One principal per zone will be featured each week! See all the archives. #LISDprofile
