Hebron Feeder Schools Flourish National Merit Finalists

11 Finalists Attended Elementary, Middle School in Hebron Feeder

Throughout the country, being selected as a National MeritFinalist® is one of the most prestigious academic accomplishments for a high school student. Eleven students from Hebron High School (Hebron) were selected for this achievement, and the five that were interviewed contributed their success to one factor- Lewisville ISD (LISD) teachers.

The five students: Ryan Fritz, Alvin Ouseph, Anirudh Sivakumar, Chae Park and Athena Chen, have all attended elementary, middle and high school in LISD. They attended Killian or Creek Valley Middle School, and Coyote Ridge, Hebron Valley, Castle Hills, and/or Polser Elementary Schools.

"LISD has always had incredible teachers," Sivakumar said. "They've tended to focus a lot on vocabulary, and critical reading which was crucial in the PSAT and SAT."

Polser Elementary Second-Graders Market To The Three Little Pigs

Students Collaborate with Class in Alabama for Real Estate Project

The second-grade students at Polser Elementary (Polser) have been collaborating with a class in Alabama for an activity in project-based learning (PBL) - a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. They have communicated back and forth through Twitter and Skype.

Carol Haney, second-grade teacher at Polser, teamed up with Carol McLaughlin, second-grade teacher at Greystone Elementary School in Hoover City, Alabama, through Twitter's Tweetchat over engaging science lessons. They decided to do the same class project so students would be able to exchange their ideas.

Haney and McLaughlin twisted the classic story "The Three Little Pigs" into a research and design project that required students to engage in brainstorming and collaborating with each other. The driving question for the PBL was, "How can we, as second grade real estate developers, design, build and market the cheapest home that will protect the three little pigs from the big bad wolf?"

Hicks Elementary Participates in "Water Rocks" Field Trip

Students Travel Across Texas to Engage in Environmental Activities

Hicks Elementary (Hicks) fifth-grade teachers took their in-class science learning across the state of Texas for an outdoor experience.

The teachers paired with "Education in Action," a non-profit organization that offers summer camps, leadership academies and one-day field trips with a goal of empowering young people to be informed and active leaders in their communities.

Students visited Cameron Park Zoo in Waco and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, participating in many lessons and hands-on activities relating to water.

Specifically at Cameron Park Zoo, students explored the Brazos River county exhibit, learning where the Brazos River flows throughout Texas and tracking its sources. They also studied several animals that live in the five ecological regions of Texas where the Brazos River passes through.

"I like how we learned about the different areas of Texas and the different animals that live in each region," Calvin Herr, fifth-grader at Hicks said.
