mhs_marcus_national_merit

Lewisville ISD (LISD) recently announced the district's 68 high school finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program® (NMSP). Marcus High School (MHS) students hold fourteen of those spots.

With high Pre-SAT scores, these students advanced as semi-finalists of the program during their sophomore year of high school. To become finalists, students submitted a detailed scholarship application that provided academic record information, participation in school and community activities, demonstration of leadership abilities and honors and awards they've received. Semifinalists have to have outstanding academic records, be endorsed by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm their previous Pre-SAT score.

Thirteen of the MHS finalists attended an LISD elementary and middle school before succeeding at MHS.

Highland Village Elementary Gets Digital

Parents Gain Knowledge with Book Study, Showcases

hve_highland_village_elementary

How does a generation that lacked technology help prepare a group of students with the world at their fingertips? Parents at Highland Village Elementary (HVE) are learning how to do just that by participating in a book study and engaging one another on Understanding the Digital Generation's topics. They've read about issues like new skills in a digital world, relevant classroom technology, the importance of student collaboration and technological balance.

In the book, authors Ian Jukes, Ted McCain, Lee Crockett and Mark Prensky write, "Because [our children] have grown up in a digital environment, new research is inferring that the brains of the digital generation have and continue to change physically and chemically - our children and our students are actually neurologically wired differently than our generation."

During the study, participants were able to chat online as they read through the book. In addition to online dialogues, parents had face-to-face discussions after every four chapters. Teachers and students joined in the book study meetings to showcase how they are using technology to make their classrooms more conducive to learning.

Downing Middle School Programs Golfing Robots

Students Enhance Technology Studies with Competition

downing_middle_robots The Gaming and Robotics students in sixth- through eighth-grade at Downing Middle School (Downing) have been rigorously working to create golfing robots for a recent competitive classroom tournament.

Under the direction of teachers Jeff Skelton and Craig Jurca, students first had to learn necessary programming skills for the Lego Mindstorms NXT Common Palette, a programmable robotics kit and software. Once the students had a grasp of the concepts, the Robotic Golf Challenge could begin. They spent time planning, designing, building and programming their robots.

With all the preparation and knowledge-application, students experienced the regiment that many engineers must go through while designing. Testing and retesting their robots helped the students rework their software and perfect their programmed golfing skills.
