LISD Announces 2013-14 National Merit Finalists
11 Students Representing HHS Honored
Lewisville ISD (LISD) is pleased to announce 68 high school seniors were recently named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP). There are 37 finalists representing Flower Mound High School (FMHS), 11 representing Hebron High School (HHS), one representing Lewisville High School (LHS), 14 representing Marcus High School (MHS) and five representing The Colony High School (TCHS). Ninety-nine percent of these students have attended LISD elementary and/or middle schools. They are also 68 of the only 1,300 elite students who are National Merit Finalists nationwide.
"Becoming a National Merit finalist is a prestigious accomplishment and I'm proud of these students' academic success," LISD Superintendent Dr. Stephen F. Waddell said. "I am also proud of our schools. The fact that most of these finalists grew up in LISD is a great testament that our teachers are preparing students for their futures."
Check out the next edition of Hawk Pride on March 26 to find out what HHS feeder elementary and middle schools these finalists attended and how they feel these schools have helped prepare them for academic success and college readiness!

Creek Valley Middle School's Educational Adventure
Seventh-Graders Venture to Mineral Wells Fossil Park
Teachers encourage students to continue to learn on the weekends, even if they don't have homework. As an example, on Saturday, Feb. 1, Creek Valley Middle School (Creek Valley) seventh-grade science teacher Michael Staten provided an outdoor learning opportunity for students. He invited his students and their families to join him in an exploration of the Mineral Wells Fossil Park in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Staten, who is also a member of the Dallas Paleontological Society, which operates the fossil park, wanted to engage students in a real-world environment scientific study, where students could have a hands-on experience. After discussing the trip idea with Creek Valley Principal Nicole Jund, he decided to plan an optional class trip to the park where students could search for 300 million year-old marine fossils.
This outing also offered an opportunity to complete one of the student's nine science experiences required in Staten's classes. Every six weeks, students must complete a science experience and reflection of their choice. Parents are encouraged to participate and are required to sign off on each one.

Polser Elementary Students Receive Writing Lesson From Children's Author
Author Pam Calvert Presents Story Techniques
Polser Elementary (Polser) received an exciting visit last week from Pam Calvert, author of Princess Peepers, Multiplying Menace and more. The visit wasn't a book reading or signing; it was an engaging learning experience that included an English lesson, science experiments, motivational speech and a book re-enactment.
On Thursday, Feb. 27, Calvert stopped by Polser for one of her 30 annual presentations to students nation-wide. She spoke to prekindergarten through fifth-grade students about what to include when writing a story and to never give up on their dreams.
The presentation started with a motivational speech that encouraged students to follow their dreams no matter where their lives lead them. Calvert shared a little bit of her background telling students her story as a a chemistry teacher after graduating college, while also writing for a running magazine before deciding to quit teaching in order to expand her writing to children's books.

Hebron High School Advanced Placement Art Students Reach Out
Students Create Portraits for Less Fortunate Children
While some art classes ask students to create portraits of themselves, Hebron High School (HHS) Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art students decided to participate in a more meaningful portrait project - The Memory Project.
The nationwide initiative encourages art students create portraits for children and teens around the world that are living in orphanages or similar homes. Considering youth in such situations usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with meaningful reminders of their childhood. The project also allows art students to practice kindness and service to others while enriching their portraiture skills.
The Memory Project made its way to HHS through AP Art Teacher Ellen Kudlicki, who was contacted by the organization last year through a mailer for AP Studio Art teachers. Kudlicki decided she wanted her students to contribute to a project that benefits others as well as themselves.
