McKamy Middle School Broadcasts Texas Revolution

Seventh-Grade Students Use Film to Learn Texas History

The seventh-graders at McKamy Middle School (McKamy) are crossing curriculums and taking their Texas History lessons to a whole new subject - Broadcast Journalism.

While studying the Texas Revolution and Mexican Nationalism, students were encouraged to put their creativity into action by creating enriching newscasts with wartime perspective. Some classes took on the viewpoint of Mexico, while others expressed aspects of the opposing Texans.

Beginning with research, students studied many different battles from the timeperiod. Within their chosen groups, students had to agree on one specific battle to cover in their newscasts. Once the battle was unanimously decided, more research was done as the students began planning their scripts.

"I liked that we were able to choose our own battle and group members," student Meredith Miller said. "I also liked how the guidelines were flexible enough we could interact in our own way for the newscast."

Bluebonnet Elementary Hosts 1:X Showcase

Students Present, Teach Mobile Applications to Community

Students in first- through fifth-grade at Bluebonnet Elementary (Bluebonnet) are using iPads and mobile applications (apps) to enrich their classroom lessons on a daily basis. To show parents, Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees and members of the community just how well these tools are helping them learn, the students hosted a 1:X™ Student Showcase to present their recent projects and even give a few lessons on their favorite learning apps.

"The 1:X Student Showcase was an amazing opportunity to see all the different projects and assignments the kids have worked on so far this year," parent Elizabeth Guess said. "I was so impressed with how confident and enthusiastic the students were demonstrating the different iPad apps they used in the classroom, and equally impressed with how they were able to express themselves so individually and creatively within a particular project. It was awesome to see them so engaged in their own learning!"

Lining the halls of Bluebonnet, students taught short tutorials on how they use apps in their classroom. Kidblog, inClass, Scribble My Story and Tellagami were just a few of the many apps students presented. Along with presenting how to use the apps, students showed off some of their projects and skills they've learned because of the iPads.

Flower Mound High School Hosts Westminster Choir

Westminster Choir Travels to FMHS to Sing, Mentor

While on a performance tour across the United States, the Westminster Choir, from Rider University in Princeton, N.J., took time to engage with high school choirs and host learning workshops. Their most recent stop to share their talents and inspiration - Flower Mound High School (FMHS).

FMHS is one of the select few high schools chosen for this kind of clinic during the Southwestern portion of the tour. During the visit, they hosted the Westminster Choir for lunch and allowed the choir members to informally chat about each other's programs, career plans and performances.

After lunch, the students from both schools performed for one another.

"The choir sounded like one voice," student Henrik Zetterstrom said. "It was really cool to meet so many people who were just like us and who understood us."

Old Settlers Elementary Principal Profile

Meet Principal Kelly Hayunga

Check out the profile about Old Settlers Elementary's (OSE) first-year principal Kelly Hayunga, who discusses her favorite thing about her job; what she enjoys doing in her spare time; and dishes some advice to someone who is interested in becoming a principal.

Lewisville ISD (LISD)You have one school semester under your belt as principal. What has the experience been like thus far?

Kelly Hayunga (KH)My first semester as principal has been amazing. The OSE staff, students and parents have been so welcoming and supportive and have made the transition extremely smooth. There is never a dull moment - I continue to meet new people and look forward to what exciting things will come my way each day.

LISDWhat is your favorite thing about your job as an educator in LISD?

KHMy favorite thing about being an educator in LISD is having the opportunity to work with all the other educators associated with the district. No matter what the question, there is always someone, somewhere within the district who has the answer or who will work with you to find it.

LISDWhat is something that most would not know about you?

KHSomething most would not know about me is that I attended school in LISD, elementary through high school. I attended Timber Creek Elementary, Milliken Middle School, Marcus High School (MHS) ninth- through 10th-grade, and graduated from Lewisville High School in 1987.

LISDWhat do you like to do in your spare time?

KHI am currently spending all my spare time working to finish my dissertation. I also spend a lot of my time watching Marcus High School basketball, as my son plays on the junior varsity team.

LISDWhat piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in becoming a principal or entering the education field?

KHYou will never regret it. Every day is different and everyday is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Stay tuned for the next Principal Profile, published on LISD's website every Friday morning. One principal per zone will be featured each week! See all the archives. #LISDprofile
