McKamy FedEx Fridays

Seventh-Graders Use Autonomous Time to Create Enriching Projects

Author Daniel H. Pink states in his bestselling book "Drive," "The secret to high performance...is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world."

Seventh-graders in Andrea Edge's Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) English Language Arts class at McKamy Middle School (MMS) have taken this concept and are using it during their rigorous weekly autonomous project-time, known as "FedEx Fridays" - a term first used by Australian company Atlassian because their employees had to "deliver" ideas overnight like FedEx. Instead of delivering their products overnight, students are given four to five Fridays to create their projects and use the remaining Fridays in the nine-week period to present their projects and plan future FedEx Friday endeavors.

"Guided by a curricular theme for each grading period, students are encouraged to research ideas and create products that reflect their own interests," teacher Andrea Edge said. "They are given autonomy over their education by deciding who they work with, what they create and how they work together."

Bluebonnet Economics PBL Helps Local Charities
Second-Graders Team Up to Raise Money and Give Back

Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give."

Bluebonnet Elementary (Bluebonnet) second-graders learned the importance of giving back to the local community through a recent economics project-based learning (PBL) activity - a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of what they're studying.

The driving question for the project, "How can we, as good citizens of our community, produce a product to earn money to help people in need?"

Flower Mound High School French Students Host "Chanel" Awards to Learn French

Recently, Flower Mound High School (FMHS) students in DeLynn Denton and Apryl Russell's French I classes completed an engaging fashion show project-based learning (PBL) opportunity to explore French vocabulary and fashion.

"I feel that the students had such a great time learning and using their knowledge that they didn't even realize learning was taking place," Denton said. "They were definitely entertained and it was the highlight of our unit."

For the project, students were encouraged to create a French-themed clothing collection using French vocabulary words and verbs to model to their class in true runway fashion. Students voted on the best class collection and then, all FMHS French classes voted on a final collection to receive the "FMHS Chanel Award."

FMHS' AFJROTC Earns Wild Card Spot U.S. CyberPatriot Semifinals

Congratulations to FMHS' Air Force Junior Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) CyberPatriot Team for earning a wild card spot to compete in the 2014 CyberPatriot Semifinals -- a first for any Lewisville ISD (LISD) team to make it to the semifinals. This is a huge accomplishment for FMHS' team, who used books and online resources to train on their own. During the first round of the competition, the cadets had six hours to secure a Windows server and workstation. For the second round, the cadets had six hours to secure a Windows server, Vista workstation and a Linux/Ubuntu server. CyberPatriot is the premier national high school cyber defense competition created by the Air Force Association to inspire high school students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future.

Good luck to the following cadets at semifinals: Gregory York, Christopher Pattison, Marshall Montgomery, Cody Jones, Megan Kennedy  and Sarah Pavlik. Alternate team members include: Bryce Mackey, Antti Pirhonen and Matthew Whittenberg. Students were lead by Coach Ret. Msgt. Lisa Breuer and Information Security Mentor Pam York.
