Vickery Elementary Students Investigate Math

Fifth-Graders Use Unique Methods to Learn Fractions, Percents

Students in Julie DiSalvo's fifth-grade math classes at Vickery Elementary (Vickery) better come through the door with their thinking caps on and plenty of energy, because hers isn't any ordinary pencil and paper math class - it's Math Investigations.

"I love Math Investigations because it really makes the students think outside the box," DiSalvo said. "They are so accustomed to learning math lecture-style. Now they see why the math makes sense."

Specifically on Nov. 18, students - divided into four different groups of four in each class - were using picture models and stories to figure out fractions and percents. They were also referring back to and discussing their use of  10-by-10 Grids from the prior day's lesson. Class-wide questions and answers took place following the allotted time for each assignment. All the engaging activities are part of the current "What's that Portion" unit in Math Investigations.
