Prairie Trail Math Investigations

Third-Graders Learn Multiplication

German Mathematician Georg Cantor once said, "In mathematics, the art of proposing a question must be held of higher value than solving it."

Third-grade students in Gretchen Hudson's class at Prairie Trail Elementary (Prairie Trail) recently started learning about multiplication via an engaging Math Investigations unit about "Many Things that Come in Groups."

Nov. 12, students in Hudson's class began their lesson in groups to work with a 10-Minute Math warm up setting times on an analog clock. First, students were prompted to set the time for 10:15 a.m. Then, they were asked if they were going to read for 20 minutes, what the lapse of time they needed to show it would be from 10:15.

All the Broken Pieces

Briarhill Middle School Students Learn About Vietnam War

As former United States House Representative Steve Buyer once said, "Because all of us believe and understand in the fabric of the common body of why we call ourselves American is to care for the men and women who wear the uniform; and when they take off the uniform, we care for them when they are veterans."

Recently, Briarhill Middle School (BMS) seventh-graders read "All the Broken Pieces" by Ann E. Burg - a novel that takes place just after the Vietnam War and revolves largely around Vietnam veterans and a young boy's lasting impacts from the war.

In light of Veterans Day and to help make the novel's history relevant and engaging for students, BMS teachers invited United States Army Vietnam veteran James Doss to their classrooms to speak to students about his experience during the war.

Heritage Avitars

Students Make Commercials for Enriching PBL Expereience

Recently, Heritage Elementary (Heritage) first-graders participated in a project-based learning (PBL) opportunity -- rigorous projects where students are allowed voice and choice through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem or challenge -- to learn more about their community and answer the question "How can we, as first-graders at Heritage, show others that our community is unique?"

For the project, students had to design a travel brochure that highlighted hometown heroes. In addition, students were encouraged to make 30-second commercials using the Tellagami application. Each group had a set designer, costume designer, director and actor to create the commercials that showcased a location in their community.

"I hope my students will find a sense of community and pride in their home through this journey," teacher Kelly Martin said.

To take the lesson further, students' projects will be on display at the City of Highland Village's Travel Fair for invited business and guests to see.

Giddy-Up! Hebron High School Hosts 26th Annual Student Council Friendship Dinner
Student Councils from All LISD High Schools Attend

Nov. 12, Hebron High School (HHS) hosted the 26th annual Lewisville ISD (LISD) Student Council Friendship Dinner, a social event that brings all LISD Student Council members together for a special night of dinner, games, reflection and team-building. Student Council members from all five LISD high schools - Flower Mound (FMHS), HHS, Lewisville (LHS), Marcus (MHS) and The Colony (TCHS) - participated in the event.

"The students love going to the Friendship Dinner," HHS Student Council Advisor Benjamin Stroud said. "We might be from different schools, but we are all here for a common factor, and that's to grow together as a district."

This year's dinner benefitted City House, a youth center in Plano, Texas, that provides emergency shelter and transitional residential services to children and young adults who are in need due to abuse, neglect or homelessness. Each school was asked to bring 20 items to benefit City House, including toilet paper, detergent, household cleaning supplies, paper towels, Kleenex and trash bags.
