Hometown Heroes Make Thursdays Special
Student Leaders from The Colony High School Visit Feeder Pattern Elementary Schools As an elementary-aged child, seeing high school students at school was an exciting day. Some students would aggressively wave to get their attention, some would act shy and some would act silly. Regardless of the reaction, having an older student in the classroom was like having a celebrity in your midst. For elementary students in The Colony High School (TCHS) feeder pattern, "Hometown Heroes" are regular "celebrities" in their classrooms on Thursdays throughout the school year. Hometown Heroes are a group of more than 90 student leaders from TCHS - top 10 academic students, football players, cheerleaders, Topcats, basketball players, soccer players and many more - who have and will visit all elementary schools in the TCHS feeder pattern - B.B. Owen, Camey, Ethridge, Morningside, Peters Colony and Stewart's Creek Elementary Schools - this year to help students with math, reading and spelling. And while they tend to tower over the students in stature, they're not afraid to get down on the elementary students' level to help in any way they can. Find all about Hometown Heroes - including what TCHS' Principal James Hill had to say about this engaging activity - by clicking "more!"

Camey Elementary Fifth-Graders Learn About Math Using Technology
Students Use iPads to Expand Word Problems
"For the class food drive, your class collected 320 cans of food. Each family gets 40 cans of food. How many cartons will you need to pack them?" Many can recall math word problems like this from their own school days; some remember solving them quickly while others might have struggled just a bit. But these math word problems were a breeze for students in Shetasha Hudson's fifth-grade class at Camey Elementary (Camey), who recently learned fun ways to solve the rigorous math problems using Quick Response (QR) codes on iPads posted across the school.
