M=Change in Y-Value Divided by Change in X-Value
The Colony High School Math Students Learn Slope Using CBR Motion Detectors Eleventh- and 12th-grade students at The Colony High School (TCHS) recently learned about the slope of a line using CBR motion detectors - a device that analyzes motion data - as part of a project-based learning (PBL) lesson in Anthony Hufford's Mathematical Models with Applications class. In mathematics, the slope of a line is a number that describes both the direction and steepness of a line and is denoted by the letter "m." Slope is calculated by finding the ratio of the vertical change divided by the horizontal change between any two distinct points on a line. Sound tough? Not for Hufford's students. ˇBienvenido a Killian! Vamos a Conocernos
Students Skype With Professionals in Foreign Countries as Part of Project-Based Learning
Eighth-grade Spanish students at Killian Middle School (KMS) recently learned about foreign languages using technology as part of a recent project-based learning (PBL) lesson about becoming bilingual and/or multilingual. After researching bilingualism in the workplace and in school, students worked together to prepare questions for a bilingual or multilingual professional in a foreign country to later Skype and FaceTime with - continuously involving our diverse community, staff and students to use their strengths, resources and talents to provide engaging, innovative experiences for all learners. Want to find out more about this PBL, including what KMS' Spanish teacher had to say? Click "more!"

PB-What? PBL!
Griffin Middle School Students Learn Various Concepts Through Project-Based Learning
What do cells, Newton's Three Laws of Motion and designing a restaurant have in common? They're all part of a project-based learning (PBL) flexible learning time activity Griffin Middle School (GMS) has implemented for students.
Each Wednesday and Thursday for an hour, sixth- through eighth-grade students meet in groups in GMS' hallways to work on their PBL activities. Sixth-grade is working to design a restaurant concept for up-and-coming nearby furniture retailer Nebraska Furniture Mart; seventh-grade is learning about plant, animal and human cells through work on iPads or poster board; and eighth-graders are designing activities to correspond with Newton's Three Laws of Motion, whether it's building a volcano, learning velocity through a rubber band and penny slingshot or making a whirlpool tornado out of soda bottles.
"This is such an engaging, enriching activity for all students," Principal Michele Sandefur said. "They have the opportunity to choose their own groups, work together to design their own lessons and problem-solve, and ultimately take control of their own learning. Not only are they acquiring knowledge during the twice-weekly PBL time, they're also taking away real-world skills about working together - whether they recognize it or not!"

Teacher/Student Highlights from Cougar Nation
Paying it Forward at Griffin Middle School Griffin Middle School (GMS) students in the Pay it Forward Club recently sent out the message to do a good deed for others. Students recently made small gifts to send to others in school who they felt had contributed to the school in a positive way. Along with the gift was a small card with the following message: "Congratulations! You have been visited by a good deed! Someone has done a good deed for you; no payment is expected. We only ask that you keep it going by doing a good deed for someone else. I hope your day has been brightened in some way! Now you can go pay it forward!" GMS students in the club hope the idea catches on and continues to grow.

LISD's Director of Health Services Named Texas School Nurses Organization's School Nurse Administrator of the Year
The Texas School Nurses Organization recently announced Lewisville ISD (LISD)'s Director of Health Services, Melanie Vincelette, as the organization's 2013 School Nurse Administrator of the Year. "When it was announced I won, the organization told me part of the nomination said I am a 'wonderful role model' to those colleagues who nominated me. That struck me, because being seen as a role model to anyone is a true honor," Vincelette said. "I'm excited to receive this award, but the biggest honor is knowing my co-workers chose to nominate me for it." Click "more" to learn more about Vincelette's dedication to student health.
