Thermal Belt Outreach
Heartwood Holiday Fundraiser for Thermal Belt

Each year Heartwood purchases a handmade ornament to sell for your decorating and gift giving needs and donates the entire purchase price to Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry. For over 20 Years Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry has provided financial and food assistance to thousands of Polk County residents in need.

Our 2015 fundraiser ornament is a fall leaf in pewter, brass or copper, representing the beauty of our place as the leaves change and fall. They are perfect for autumn hostess gifts or holiday tree ornaments. They will slip easily into holiday cards to mail to friends and family, stockings that need to be stuffed, and they make great thank-you gifts.

It really is the gift that keeps on giving because the entire retail price of $14 goes directly to Thermal Belt Outreach. Help us share the spirit of the season.

As colder weather approaches, we would like to ask for your help to reduce vehicle idling on and around our school campus.  We are asking all parents, guardians, faculty and staff not to allow vehicle engines to idle unnecessarily.

These three simple changes will help improve the air our children breathe on campus, as well as the air quality in our Saluda community:

-Turn off your car/truck engine when you arrive and any time you expect to be parked for more than 1-2 minutes on or near the school campus.
-Please do not arrive in the car pick up lines before 3:00pm each day.
-When waiting for students in the dismissal lines each day, please turn off your car/truck engine until the line begins moving.

T
hank you for your support!  Turn you key and be idle free!

A December to Remember
With spring like weather, it's hard to believe that Christmas is only 10 days away. December roses have been spotted blooming around town and rhododendron sporting new buds. Instead of stocking snow melt, Saludians are spending December outdoors enjoying the mild weather. Of course, all of this is about to change and winter is still  knocking at the door, and who knows...there could still be snow for Christmas!

It's going to be a holly, jolly Christmas in Saluda!

Painting In The Studio/ Brushwork Boot Camp
Jim Carson will offer a workshop, titled "Painting in the Studio/ Brushwork Boot Camp", on Thursday-Saturday, January 21-23, 2016.

This indoor painting workshop provides a superior learning and teaching environment for students to grasp the basic fundamentals of impressionist painting.

The workshop will concentrate on values, design, and temperature variety, all while simplifying the painting approach to achieve spontaneous and bold brushwork.

The students will paint from photo references and or still life set ups in the studio. There will be lots of one on one easel time, demonstrations by Jim on Thursday and Friday, and a general critique of the day's work at the end of each day. The workshop price is $350.

The workshop is open to all levels, from beginners to advanced. A list of paint selections, brushes, etc. will be furnished after registration.

Jim recently won the Award of Distinction at the 2015 American Impressionist Society National Exhibition in Scottsdale, Az. The prize is a one fourth page ad in the May/June 2016 edition of Plein Air Magazine.

For more information, visit the "news/workshop" link at jimcarson.net or contact Jim at 828-749-3702, or email to jimcarson151@gmail.com.

The Saluda Community Choir was formed in 2015 with the intention of bringing people together through the joyful power of song. It meets every Monday at 7:00pm at St. Matthews Church, one of Saluda's historically black churches, recently restored by members of the Saluda community and featuring amazing acoustics. Choir director Patricia Roskens came home to Saluda after more than 30 years as an international music educator and is passionate about music's ability to allow the soul to be expressive. All are welcome to come and make a joyful noise together.

The Saluda Community Choir is supported by donations from the community and a startup grant from the Tryon Fine Arts Center's Grassroots Arts Program.

Saluda Hometown Christmas
Thanks to the Saluda Business Association for sponsoring Saluda Hometown Christmas. The weather was spring like bringing everyone out for a beautiful stroll down Main Street and a chance to meet and greet friends and neighbors.

A special thanks to Susan Casey who orchestrated getting new lights on all the buildings this year, and to Shelley DeKay and Allen Burdett who quietly put up the nativity scene and the Christmas carolers at the entrance of downtown every year.  From string bands to jazz, the musicians performing this year were outstanding and a special gratitude for the businesses who sponsor the music each year. Thanks to members of the Overmountain String Band who volunteered their musc at the Saluda Library and Darryl Olivier, saxophonists for providing the music at the Saluda Historic Depot.

Event is sponsored by the Saluda Business Association. Please visit saluda.com, the official town guide, to learn more about the SBA.

At Salamander, we still play -- and we have the toys to prove it -- American made and eco-friendly.  Trains, tractors, submarines, tug boats, dump trucks (and even tea sets) made from recycled milk jugs, BPA and PVC free, dishwasher safe.  And for those picky eaters, construction vehicle utensils (you  must see to believe).  For the babies on your gift list, we've found cuddly "towel dolls" and musical ducks and owls, made by a venerable German company.  And you will want to check out the giant stuffed animals handmade in Georgia -- lions and tigers and bears, oh my.

These are just some of the more recent additions to our shop which features wood, fiber, metal, glass and clay -- American handcraft from over 30 states as well as some fine fair trade art.  You can find jewelry, buttery soft leather handbags, scarves, Haitian metal art, rugs, pottery, musical instruments -- and much more.

If that's not enough, we are your local bookstore, where you can find a carefully curated collection of great reads, or order most anything in print.

The Salamander Experience is all about music, color and fun, served up in a relaxing atmosphere.  Now in its 12th year, Salamander is at 7 West Main Street, Saluda  828-749-3466.

heartwood Christmas Eve at Heartwood
A few years ago we realized it was men we saw most on Christmas Eve morning, waiting at the door for us to open so they could choose that perfect gift and have it wrapped prettily. For many men, it is tradition to wait until the day before to shop. We have come to call it "man day" at Heartwood and we will be serving coffee, cookies, and beer from 10-4 on Christmas Eve for your enjoyment while we wrap. Women are welcome, too...of course!

Photo Book of Pearson's Falls
Daniel Cox worked at Pearson's Falls for three years as caretaker. During that time, he photographed many things that visitors would not see on a normal visit. Most people just come to hike the 1/4 mile trail to the falls. But Pearson's Falls is a botanical preserve and has many wildflowers. The falls are also closed on heavy rain and snow days. He composed over 180 pictures along with some poetry and history of the property. He is retired now and selling these books for $20 plus $5 for shipping and handling, or he will make arrangements for pick up in Saluda. These books would make great Christmas presents.

To place an order, please contact Daniel by email at dgccbc@bellsouth.net or call 828-696-5274.

Community Foundation Continues Duke TIP Scholarships, Investments in All Students
The Polk County Community Foundation is pleased to announce that scholarships will be available for local students to attend Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) Summer Studies camps in 2016.

In 2012, the Foundation's Board of Directors voted to approve a three-year pilot program to completely fund middle and high school students' attendance at summer enrichment camps offered by Duke TIP. Foundation board, staff, and committee members researched various opportunities to help underserved populations and vetted Duke TIP as a potential partner in the endeavor. As a result of the initiative, gifted students in Polk County and Landrum who qualified for Duke TIP's Summer Studies Programs received full scholarships to attend three-week camps held on college campuses, take intensive advanced level courses, and live with talented peers from many states.

The program was launched just in time for the first students to apply for the camps in January of 2013. That summer, 15 local students packed their bags and headed to campuses across North Carolina and Georgia. Interest and participation in the program grew rapidly, with 37 students attending camps in 2014 and 40 students in 2015.

Students and their families have overwhelmingly reported that the intellectual and social growth Duke TIP provided was a positive force in their lives, with many characterizing the experience as "life-changing." One mother commented that having such an opportunity in our community confirms her family's decision to raise children here. "We made the right choice," she says. Since the Foundation does not have access to students' confidential information, residents of Polk County and Landrum who have qualified for Duke TIP Summer Studies will be notified of eligibility and 2016 application instructions by their schools.

In addition to supporting 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students with Duke TIP scholarships, the Polk County Community Foundation funds a college advisor at Polk County High School and Early College and funded the 2015-2016 band program at Polk County High School so all students can play in the band, regardless of their ability to pay for this extracurricular activity. In Landrum, Mary F. Kessler grants have funded artist-in-residence programs at O.P. Earle Elementary and Landrum Middle schools, which culminate in "Kessler Cultural Evening" receptions open to the community. The Foundation annually offers college scholarships for graduating high school seniors and adults going back to school, as well as the "Leadership and International Understanding Merit Award" for year-abroad studies through AFS, where students live with a host family and attend a local high school overseas. Generous operating fund grants support the mentoring programs provided by the Polk County office of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Individual donors have also worked through the Community Foundation to provide band instruments to Polk County Middle School, give away books at Sunny View Elementary School, take Tryon Elementary and Polk Central Elementary school students on college visits, and fund special projects in Saluda Elementary School classrooms. Anonymous donors working through the Community Foundation recently enabled Polk County Schools to offer free breakfast and lunch for all elementary and middle school students this year. "Our community is full of students with unique needs and talents," says Foundation President & CEO Elizabeth Nager. "We are fortunate to have generous donors whose gifts allow the Foundation to explore new ways of supporting them."

Mary Waterman Boehm Talking To Martha Stoney Anderson in 1981
Summer Visitors - The Cuba Connection

This is a remembrance written by summer resident, Mary Waterman Boehm 1981 that was published in "Saluda 100 Years" history book with permission by Charlene Pace, author.

The Waterman's and Twigg's and Ogden's came here every year from Havana. Bernice Twiggs was the first one to buy a house in Saluda. She and her husband came by boat to Key West, changed to a train, and in Jacksonville, boarded the train that brought them to Saluda, all the way up the mountain. They'd come to stay all summer long, with Henry Twiggs, Sr., coming for a short time. But in those days, if you worked for the British Railways in Havana as he did, you got longer vacations than you do today.

They bought this old mountain house on Florida Avenue that had had two mountain families living in it, with only an outside staircase. They had it made into one big house with an inside staircase, too. There were some beautiful holly trees around it.

One year they stayed the entire year, the mother, the grandmother and the little boy, Henry, Jr., because the political unrest in Havana was such that the Twiggs, themselves, were afraid to stay there with their child. They had a mountain girl who would come and build the fire and get things squared away. The little boy was too young for school. But this got their friends in Havana interested in coming here.

My own family came here when I was fourteen years old, and we stayed at Holly Hill, which was where I met Pam Burney (Webster). Her family was staying there too. It was a nice boarding house that Miss Wilcox had, and she set a beautiful table. Miss Wilcox, of all people, put on the dog more than anybody else did. She had maids that had starched aprons, cleaner and more starched than anybody else. Except that everyone used cloth napkins in those days, she would have been the type to have linen napkins when everyone else used paper. She was really very nice. We all dressed for dinner at night. Everyone was very proper then. In fact, up until a few years ago, I would never go down town in shorts. You just didn't do it. The mountain people would not have approved.

(Martha said, "I never wore jeans. In fact, I bought my first pair of jeans last year. Even when all my friends were wearing jeans, it just didn't seem proper--the influence of the old days.")

We came here and spent most of the summer, my mother and my father and myself. We stayed in the little cottage which was the one that Anne and Hank Osborne own now. It was certainly not the way it looks now. It was much smaller and more Spartan, but up to Miss Wilcox's standards. It was respectable. There was a tennis court by the third little cottage, and we all played there. In those days there were a lot of young people, and we had a great time. There were plenty of them in their teens, and not so early teens. It was fun!
Some of the names were: the Holmes boys, there was Allen Holmes and his sister, Madeline who lived with a cousin who had the Seace house. Then there were the Fishers and the Dana children down around the hill, and the Keenan's and Mary Wright Shand. They were all here and had a good time. And then, myself, I ended up going to Converse from Havana because Bernice Twiggs was going. For a couple of years my family rented the Schenk house, the one the Kirkland's bought, and now the Wannamaker's have it. They bought their house about the time we bought ours from Miss Blair's estate.

(Martha asked, "What was Miss Blair's name? Did she have one? Her first name must have been 'Miss'.") Miss Blair had the library in what is now my living-room before she had the library down at the Goelet Building. She started out with a library here. It was sort of primitive. She collected a lot of books, and people used to come to borrow them. Books were to be treasured! (Martha said, "I read all the Tarzan books from her library. We'd play Tarzan, my brother, Bill, and I, and sometimes Cole's and Stricker Mays, and Tucker Dana and some of Miss Blair's nephews, down through the jungle of honeysuckle that's where our garden is now. It hung from the trees like ropes in Tarzan. And there were fallen trees. You could walk across the trees like over a stream, and after reading all the Tarzan books we could imagine we were in his jungle.")

I want you to know that my own children, after we'd bought our house did the same thing. They'd whoop and holler Tarzan yells. But they were swinging on kudzu. By that time we had a beautiful stand of kudzu! My little girl would hear them from where she was crawling on the floor, and she'd crawl faster and faster out onto the porch. But Tarzan was something we were very fond of. I guess it goes from generation to generation.

The Ogden's were also friends of the Twiggs who came later. They came before Bill and I bought the house in the fall of 1950 from Miss Blair's brother, Algernon Blair. The Ogden's bought most of Piney Mountain. In the depths of the Depression, they had a road put in, and the workmen worked for 25 cents an hour. That was about 1937 or 1938. They had only two children, then, and built a little cabin up on top of Piney. They stayed in that little cabin, with no telephone, and it was pretty scary, because they had young children. Miss Ogden would bring one or two black Jamaican maids from Cuba, one they'd had for years always came up. After a while, they bought a house a little further down the hill, next to the Shaffer's place, in front of the Walker's.

At that time, Ed Ogden was anxious to be a big landowner, and he bought almost all of Piney for practically nothing. They had seven springs there, so they dammed them up and made a pond to stock for fishing. But, too frequently, people would slip in there, and when the fish were about as big as a minute, they were busy fishing them out. They were never able to control that. Our children swam there, but it was pretty cold water because of the seven springs that fed it.

(Martha says, "This isn't a childhood memory for me, because the lake was made after I was grown. I remember, though, walking out to the old Hech's place beyond where Ogden's pond is, and it had the most magnificent view. Army friends of ours, the Davis', bought the place. It had been owned by the Hecht's, and there was a potter's place there that they turned into a guest house. They didn't keep the place very long. The children hated it because there was no excitement. But we used to pass a little log cabin on the way, near what is now the lake.

"My children used to go out to Ogden's. Papa (Father Bill) would take them out, and they would swim and fish in the pond. It was a big thing. And after he died, they were afraid to go out because of the No Trespassing sign. I had to assure them that it was perfectly all they had to do was tell anybody who wanted to know, that they were the Stoney grandchildren, Martha Stoney's children.

Bill and I hiked up to the top of Piney on our honeymoon. We spent our honeymoon at Happy Hut. That was one of the great adventures of that wonderful two weeks, going up to the top of Piney. 1 told Bill about how we used to go up when it was just a trail, before they built the cabin up there.

(Mary: My Bill and I used to love to hike, particularly in the fall. We never seemed to get here in the summertime after we moved to California. We'd come up in the fall, and I liked it better then because there were no snakes, and Piney was loaded with them in the summer. We would hike as much as fifteen miles, three or four hours of hiking, and we'd see all the wonderful things.)
