Greetings!
Fall is in the air, can you feel it? I love the tiny bit cooler weather and I suspect our students that participate in outdoor extra-curricular activities do too! I hope you were able to take part in Open House to connect with your child's teachers to see how you can help your children be successful. I enjoyed Open House with my mentee, we are working with her teachers on specifics that she needs to stay on task and do her best in school. Thank you to the teachers who not only work hard in the classroom every day, but added this all-important event into their busy schedules to engage with parents.

An important date you need to be aware of is "No Early Release Wednesday" on October 19. On this date, all schools will be scheduled for a full day instead of their normal early release. This is so middle and high school students who are participating in the district-wide PSAT and SAT school day have plenty of time to complete these important exams.

The School Board is discussing the possibility of moving high school start times a little later. We are working with an outside agency to create a survey that will be open to parents, teachers, classified employees, administrators, businesses in the community and students. Look for the survey to be released some time this Fall. Please take about 10 minutes to complete the survey and let us know what your feelings are about adjusting school start times. This will be a survey that can be completed on the computer or on your smart phone.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you on the school board and please contact me anytime with your questions, comments and concerns regarding the district at 407-317-3236 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Nancy

PSAT/SAT Dates

Please mark your calendar for October 19 for PSAT/SAT Testing Day for all 8th through 12th grade students. All 8th through 11th grade students will participate in the PSAT Test during the school day and at no cost.

Seniors will take the SAT test on the same day. This is an opportunity for our seniors to have one last chance to increase their score for free while applying for college or post-secondary programs.
School Choice to Begin Accepting Magnet Applications for 2017-18 School Year

The window for magnet applications for the 2017-18 school year will open November 1, 2016, and run through Feb. 15, 2017. Magnet programs offer the opportunity for students to discover their talents and explore their interests in a rigorous and engaging academic environment.

Parents and students, grades K-10, are invited to learn more about our 36 magnet programs at the Annual District Magnet Fairs. The elementary and middle school magnet programs will take place at Evans High School on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

The high-school Magnet Fair will be held at Colonial High School Thursday, November 10, 2016, from 5:30 PM-8:00 PM. For more information, visit schoolchoice.ocps.net.
My Brother's Keeper Initiative

OCPS, along with the City of Orlando and the Orlando Magic Organization, has accepted President Obama's challenge to participate in the My Brother's Keeper initiative. The goal is to recruit 1,000 male mentors for young males of color. Join us as we meet this challenge. To register, click here.
"Recess" Soon to be Included in OCPS Wellness Policy
kids_playing_with_ball.jpg The school board recently agreed to revise the OCPS Wellness Policy to include daily recess for elementary students. The proposed revision will go to the board for a final vote in December. The policy will state: "Each school shall provide at least 100 minutes of supervised, safe, and unstructured free-play recess each week for students in kindergarten through grade 5 so that there are at least 20 consecutive minutes of free-play recess per day, except, in limited circumstances, when in the professional judgement of the teacher it is not possible. Scheduling shall be at the discretion of the teacher."
Third Grade Portfolios
child_holding_books.jpg
All third grade students will now have a portfolio compiled of embedded assignments that are aligned with the Florida Standards. The portfolio will be one option among several others that may be used for a Good Cause Exemption if a student is in jeopardy of retention in third grade. It is important to note that these options do not take the place of the FSA standardized tests.

The portfolio includes embedded assignments required from the beginning of the year for every child that are aligned with the standards. These 15 required assignments are:
  • Given at the conclusion of most third grade Measurement Topic Plans (MTPs). MTP's are units of instruction
  • Aligned with standards taught in MTP
  • Meet the requirements of the state rule for portfolio
  • Completed by all third-graders
In addition to the portfolio, the following assessments may be used for a Good Cause exemption when administered after the 3rd grade FSA.
  • I-Ready Diagnostic
  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
  • STAR Enterprise
  • Iowa (being phased out in OCPS), SAT10 and Terranova (not administered in OCPS)
Retained 3rd graders who score at or above the 50th percentile on an approved alternative assessment are eligible for mid-year promotion.
Third Grade Good Cause Exemption Letter
All parents of third grade students should have received a letter from Superintendent Jenkins describing the process that will be used for all third grade students this year. You can find the letter by clicking here.
