Happy Midsummer! I hope everyone is taking advantage of summer break and spending time with family and friends. Please continue to keep your children learning by reading with them, sharing real world experiences with them and trying new things that you might not have time to do during the school year.

I want to again offer a special thank you to the nearly 23,000 dedicated, hardworking OCPS employees that make the school year run smoothly for the 200,000 students that make up OCPS. I hope you all take some time to rest, relax and rejuvenate before you head back to school in August. You deserve it for your selfless service to the students and families of OCPS!

Thank you for allowing me to serve our community as your voice on the school board. Please contact me anytime with your thoughts, questions or concerns regarding the school district.

Sincerely,

Nancy

Howard Middle School Celebrates Successful Year
More national awards for Howard's Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts

Howard Middle School's Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts has been designated a 2016-2018 Exemplary School by Arts Schools Network, the nation's largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools.

This award is presented to a school with an outstanding record of overall excellence in the categories of faculty and student achievement, community recognition and involvement, arts and academics integration, curriculum innovations, continuing growth and development, and state and national recognition. The Arts Schools Network presents this award to only one arts school nationally each year.

Additional awards:
  • 2016 Magnet Schools of America School of Distinction
  • 2016 College Board Award for Excellence and Innovation, in Equity through the Arts Award
  • 2015 Magnet Schools of America School of Excellence
  • 2015 Florida Arts Model School in Dance, Visual Arts, and Music by Florida Alliance for Arts Education and the Florida Department of Education
Howard provides a rigorous academic curriculum in addition to stellar arts programs with numerous partnerships in the Central Florida arts community. All magnet students are enrolled in advanced core courses that integrate the arts into the curriculum, providing enhanced opportunities for high school and college preparation.

Students are able to explore exciting classes in art, ceramics, graphic design, photography, band, chorus, orchestra, theatre, dance, guitar, piano, music theory, and art history. Students interested in musical theatre may participate in two grand performances a year. Students have many other opportunities to share their work and talent through various exhibits, concerts, recitals, and competitions.
Riverside School Sneak Peek
Please join me and Principal Butler for a tour of our newly renovated school. The Sneak Peek will be Thursday, August 11 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
Avoid the Summer Reading Slide

OCPS created a summer reading program to help STOP the Summer Reading Slide. Our goal is that OCPS students will read 20 million minutes this summer. Download the reading log for your students to keep track of how many minutes they read each day.

These minutes can be recorded at the Scholastic's Summer Reading Challenge site below or brought to their teacher any time during the first month of school. Students can log how much time they spend reading for any reason and from any of the programs listed on this website. Click here for the OCPS reading webpage.
Launch ED 1-to-1 is Coming

When the school doors open on August 15, 2016 Edgewater High School students will begin the new year with OCPS issued laptops. Students and parents look for information through school newsletters and Connect Orange calls during the summer to prepare you for the first day of school. (Evans High School students made the transition to laptops this past year.)

Changes to Next Year's Calendar
calendar-kids-banner.jpg

The school calendar for the 2016-17 school year will look a little different for parents and students. Classes will begin a week earlier than usual, beginning Monday, August 15.

Another important change is that students will not have the entire week off for Thanksgiving. Students will be in class Monday and Tuesday, November 21-22, followed by Thanksgiving Break, November 23-25. These alterations will allow the first semester to end before Winter Break. Students will no longer have to return to class in January and take final assessments for the semester.

Spring break will be March 20-24, 2017. The last day of school for students will be May 31, 2017.
