A Message from Mayor Poynton

Village Welcomes Uptick in Development

The future is definitely looking bright for the Village of Lake Zurich.  Over the past few months, the Village has seen an uptick in proposals from developers at the same time that Village staff are expanding economic development outreach efforts in order to attract more business development in Lake Zurich.

Lake Zurich continues to thrive as the economic hub of southwest Lake County. Our strength in attracting major retailers and industrial companies comes with being at the crossroads of Route 12 and Route 22, plus access to a highly educated labor pool and being surrounded by many affluent communities.

Lake Zurich's retail vacancy rate has dropped from 7% in Quarter 1 of 2016 down to 5.2% in
Quarter 2 of 2016.

Similarly, the industrial vacancy rate has dropped from 6.4% in Quarter 1 of 2016 down to 5.6% in Quarter 2 of 2016.

In addition to development proposals that are progressing for the former K-Mart property on Rand Road and Village-owned downtown sites, the Village is also looking forward to the following developments:
  • Grand Appliance and TV, 475 South Rand Road. Lake Zurich is celebrating the grand opening of this state of the art showroom, which has recently opened for business. A major electronics retailer, Grand Appliance is expected to be a large draw for the community and a big boost to the local sales tax base.
  • Consume, 569 West Route 22.  Opened this week, Consume offers a bottle shop and bar with a collection of carefully curated craft beers, whiskeys, spirits and wines, along with fresh food, all in a relaxing atmosphere.  Conveniently located in the heart of Lake Zurich near the corner of Route 12 and Route 22.

  • Franco's Pescheria, 583 North Rand Road.  A welcome addition to Lake Zurich's growing restaurant base, Franco's Pescheria offers the finest fresh seafood and products in the Midwest, delivered daily to their door.
    .
  • Tuft-Tite Building Expansion, 1200 Flex Court.  A building permit has been approved for the existing 137,787 square foot Tuft-Tite building, which will be expanded by 24,000
square feet to accommodate the growth of the plastic injection molding company
    headquartered in Lake Zurich.
  • Secretary of State, 951 South Rand Road.  The new Secretary of State location in Deer Path Commons is expected to open this fall after renovations. The location is expected to draw over 1,000 visitors per day to Lake Zurich.
  • Davenport Funeral Home, 941 South Old Rand RoadConstruction will soon be starting on the new 12,000 square foot facility on the five acre site near the south entrance to Lake Zurich, which will enhance the appearance of the Village's southern gateway.
Even though Lake Zurich seems to be experiencing a slight economic boom, the Village is continuing
to pursue additional economic development efforts. Staff is actively participating in the International Conference of Shopping Centers and Chicagoland Retail Connection deal making events, which
provides a forum for retailers and restaurants which have expansion plans to engage in direct conversation with municipalities for potential site selection.

Sidewalk Obstruction
As a reminder, please be aware that the Village Code prohibits parking on the sidewalk.

No vehicle may be parked on the front lawn or obstructing public sidewalk.

Many residents use the sidewalk for leisure and recreation and it is important to make sure that they are unobstructed and open for everyone to use.

For other property maintenance reminders, please see the Village website.

Rock the Block
Saturday, September 17th
The Village of Lake Zurich will host its 4th annual downtown block party, Rock The Block, on September 17th, 2016 from 5 - 11 pm.  Planned as an all-ages traditional street dance, partygoers are invited to Dine, Dance and (re)Discover downtown Lake Zurich. Three live bands take the stage for an evening of music, food and fun, and young party goers can visit the face painter and balloon art.

The event will be held on Main Street in downtown Lake Zurich. To accommodate the event, Main Street will be closed from Church Street to Old Rand beginning at 1 P.M. on the day of the event.

 Elections Sign Regulations

Village Code Reminder - Signs Prohibited on Parkway

With election season heating up, this is just a friendly reminder for all residents to follow the municipal code regarding yard signs and election signs.

To avoid the unsightly proliferation of signs, the Village prohibits the placement or display of signs in the parkway.  The parkway is the area between the sidewalk and the street.

Election signs should not be displayed sooner than 30 days prior to election and should be removed within five days following the election.

By the way, don't forget to register to vote!  You can now register online at the State Board of Elections or check your registration status with the County Clerk

Second Installment of Property Tax Bills
Due Friday, September 2nd
The second installment of Lake County property taxes is due Friday, September 2nd. Please note, you received one bill in May and you will not receive another bill for the second installment. If you have misplaced your second installment coupon, you can print a copy from the Treasurer's Office website by entering your PIN or address.

Keep in mind, as you pay your tax bill, Lake County only receives a small portion of your property tax payment (about 7%), and the rest is distributed to many other taxing districts.

Alpine Races - Sunday, September 11th

The Alpine Races are quickly approaching. The Alpine Races are a great chance to test yourself if you've been training, or to simply get outside and get some exercise. The Races feature a half-marathon, a 5K, a mile run for youth, and a variety of kiddie runs for small children.

Registration will be available at Road Runner Sports, 20291 N Rand Rd, Ste 105, Kildeer, IL 60074 (847-719-8949) on Saturday, September 10 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and on race day at the Barn in Paulus Park, 200 S Rand Rd, Lake Zurich (same as the race start/finish) Sunday, September 11th at 6:30 AM.

 ComEd Smart Meters

Enjoy the Benefits of a Smart Meter

Customers who have smart meters installed at their homes can enjoy many benefits.

*Access to online energy-management tools, high-usage alerts and weekly reports summarizing daily electricity usage to help manage electric bills.

*The option to enroll in ComEd's Peak Time Savings Program, and earn a credit on electric bills by voluntarily reducing electricity use when it is most in demand.

*Pay the hourly market price for electricity by signing up for Hourly Pricing and save money by shifting electricity use to times when prices are lower.

*Fewer estimated bills, and smart meters help eliminate the need for a meter reader to visit your home.

Do You Have a Smart Meter?

ComEd plans to install approximately four million smart meters in all homes and businesses across northern Illinois by the end of 2018.  The ComEd installation schedule map can help you determine if a smart meter has been installed in your home, or when you can expect to have a smart meter installed. If a smart meter has not yet been installed at your home, here's what you can expect during installation.

*You will be notified by mail when installations are scheduled for your area.

*A uniformed meter installer with appropriate identification from ComEd or Corix, a ComEd authorized contractor, will perform the installation at no cost to you.

*Please be sure there is nothing blocking access to the meter.

*Installation typically takes 10 minutes. Expect a brief interruption to your electric service.

Visit ComEd.com/SmartMeter for more information and to see the installation schedule.

Mosquito Control
The mosquito abatement program runs May through September. The Village of Lake Zurich contracts with Clarke Mosquito Control to administer its Environmental Mosquito Management Program. It is an extensive pest management plan that includes inspections, surveillance of mosquito populations, and treatments for both larval and adult mosquito control.  The program is based on disease prevention. The program with Clarke does not eradicate, but controls the mosquito population.

According to the Center for Disease Control, larval control is an effective way to reduce mosquito populations. Larval treatments are administered to prevent the larva from developing into an adult mosquito. The sites receiving larval treatment are determined from the surveillance and monitoring activities. Larvicide applications are made on foot, by vehicle, or through the use of Clarke's helicopter.

Please visit the LakeZurich.org for more information on mosquito control.

All Natural Hazard Mitigation Survey

The Lake County All Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan (ANHMP) was adopted by Lake County and 52 participating municipalities in 2012.  The ANHMP allows the County and municipalities to be eligible for hazard mitigation grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  FEMA requires that the ANHMP be updated every five years.

The Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) and Lake County are leading the update process and invite the Lake Zurich community to participate.

Click here to complete the survey. Survey responses provided will help Lake County prioritize natural hazards that could impact residents and property owners, and to determine how to be better prepared for natural hazard emergencies. The survey will remain open until October 1st, 2016.
