Village Starts Major Water Main Upgrades
|
Aging Water Mains to Be Replaced
Starting this week, the Lake Zurich Public Works Department will be conducting water main upgrades on Robertson Road, Ironwood Court, and South Shore Lane. These upgrades are expected to be finished by mid-August. The Village is investing $574,000 into this infrastructure improvement project, which will replace some 2,800 feet of 8-inch water main pipe, fire hydrants, valves, and connections to the existing water services, including a water main loop on Ironwood Court. This project is being funded by the Water and Sewer Fund. During construction hours, typically Monday through Friday from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm, residents are asked not to park on the street in this area if possible. If unavoidable, please place your address in the window of the vehicle so that crews can personally notify you if the vehicle has to be relocated due to construction activities.

K-Mart Redevelopment on Rand Road
|
Possible TIF District to Support Redevelopment
At the June 6, 2016 Village Board meeting, Village Trustees will consider retaining Kane, McKenna and Associates to set up a new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district to support the redevelopment of the former Kmart property at 225 South Rand Road.
If approved, Kane McKenna would facilitate the setup process, which will include conducting an eligibility assessment and preparing a plan that identifies the public improvements needed to encourage reinvestment in the Kmart site.
A new TIF district gives the Village a flexible, powerful tool for encouraging the redevelopment of the long-vacant Kmart site and the surrounding area. The taxes paid on the increasing property value of the redeveloped site go into a TIF fund, providing a mechanism for funding needed public improvements without raising anyone's taxes or taking funds away from other government purposes.
Unlike previous TIF districts in Lake Zurich, the Village intends to use a "pay you go" approach, spending only TIF money that is collected and not incurring any new debt. The TIF setup process does not commit the Village to any particular incentive or improvement; the priorities for using anticipated TIF revenue will be considered during the setup process.
If approved, the Village anticipates starting the TIF setup process in the coming weeks, which will include further updates, public hearings and discussions with the school district, library district, Lake County and other partner agencies.

A Most Unusual Spot to Raise Young...
|
|
Lake Zurich's local Ancient Oaks Foundation spotted this Sandhill Crane family at a wetland in the Lake Zurich Industrial Park. Look closely and you will find the parents and their colt (that is what baby crane are called) foraging for food. What a testament to the importance of having wetlands that have a diversity of plants for food and shelter for the wildlife that call the Lake Zurich area home.
Check out the nearby Community Services Facility wetland at 505 Telser Road. The Ancient Oaks Foundation is partnering with the Village to restore that area from a swamp filled with invasive weeds to a beautiful diverse wetland. It is still a work in progress but there are now chorus frogs, ducks and a myriad of dragonflies who hang out there.
Coming Soon! "Save the Monarchs" a nationwide effort to save this important pollinator from the severe decline that its populations are currently experiencing. The Ancient Oaks Foundation will be hosting several events this summer to raise awareness about the monarch butterflies and what the average person can do to reverse this trend.

Plan Your Summer Block Party Now!
Warm weather has arrived and now is the time to get your neighborhood block party requests submitted to the Village. Block parties are one of those things that help make a community feel like home and the Village wants to encourage family-friendly, safe block parties.
The Village is happy to provide barricades and temporarily close low-traffic streets. We can even have police officers and firefighters stop by for the kids on a fun courtesy visit. Please click below to submit a block party request.

Time to Watch Out for Ticks, a Growing Concern in Lake County
|

Once Considered Rare in Lake County, Lyme Disease is Becoming More Common
The average annual number of reported probable and confirmed cases of Lyme disease increased steadily from 6.7 cases between 2003-2005 to 30.3 cases between 2012-2015, an increase of over 350% in about 10 years.
The Lake County Health Department Community Health Center offers tips to help residents take precautions against ticks.
1. Stay on trails when in forest preserves and parks
2. Wear light-colored, protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, boots or sturdy shoes, a nd a head covering 3. Apply insect repellent containing DEET primarily to clothes
Each year, the Health Department conducts environmental surveillance of ticks. In conjunction with North Park University and the Lake County Forest Preserve District, it collects and tests samples for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Learn more...

2016 Bicycle Helmet Safety Campaign
|

To encourage kids to wear their helmets, any child "caught" wearing their helmet will be issued a safety citation along with a coupon redeemable for a free kids ice cream cone courtesy of the Lake Zurich Oberweis.
Each child who receives a safety citation will be automatically entered into a drawing where at the end of the campaign, one lucky child will win a brand new bicycle and helmet courtesy of George Garner Cyclery.
