Sparrow Ridge Plaza on February 17 Agenda

Planning & Zoning Public Hearing, Part 2

Lake Zurich's Planning & Zoning Commission (PZC) will continue the public hearing and development review for the proposed Sparrow Ridge Plaza development at 1075-1077 South Rand Road this Wednesday, February 17, 2016.  This is a continuation of the public hearing that began on January 20.

The proposed Sparrow Ridge Plaza development includes a 10,000 square foot retail strip mall with a drive-thru facility and outdoor dining, a child day care center, and a gas station.  The site plan blueprints can be viewed here.

This proposed development would require Village approval for a Planned Unit Development and Special Use Permit.  The PZC is tasked with making a recommendation to the Village Board on this matter.

The PZC meeting agenda is available at LakeZurich.org.  The full meeting packet is also available online.  Please join us at this meeting or watch it live on LZTV.

Lake Zurich's Parkway Tree Planting Program

Major Milestone Reached in Fight Against Emerald Ash Borer

The Village has been focusing resources on the removal of all Emerald Ash Borer infested ash trees in the public parkways (that grassy space in between the sidewalk and the road).  We are happy to announce that all 2,700 EAB-infested parkway trees have been removed ahead of schedule and are now focusing on removing infested trees in our many parks and open spaces.

This is a major milestone in the Village's fight against the invasive beetle.

Due to the high priority placed on removing the dying trees first, funding for any major replanting efforts have been minimized.  The Village is continuously examining available resources to fund capital projects based on priority levels and this includes tree replanting.  It may take a few years to replace all 2,700 trees that were removed.

Can I Replant a Parkway Tree Sooner?

Residents can choose to have a tree planted on their parkway sooner than the Village plans to do so.  Those interested in paying for a replacement tree are asked to complete a no-fee application to help ensure the tree is planted in an appropriate location and the tree is an approved species.  Lake Zurich has a certified arborist on Staff that will work with you in the tree planting process.

Please submit the application when you have decided on the species, but before purchasing the replacement tree.  The Village wants to ensure proper tree diversification throughout the Village to protect against future infestation challenges.

Coyotes in Lake Zurich Area

Residents Reporting Coyote Sightings

Lake Zurich residents have been reporting a small increase in the number of coyote sightings in the area.  Who to Call about Coyotes and When.

If you see a coyote, do not run.  Instead, make yourself look as big as possible by raising your hands over your head while yelling, and stomp your feet.  The coyote will typically jog or run away from you.  If not, the coyote might have learned that the loud noises will not hurt them, and they will often just sit and watch you.  If this is the case, simply back away and leave the area.

If you are walking your dog during an encounter, keep the dog's leash short and leave the area. However, it is possible that the coyote might follow you until you leave its territory.  If your dog gets into a fight with a coyote, do not try to separate them with your hands, but use a stick or throw something.

Food placed in your yard for other wildlife, such as birds and squirrels, can also attract coyotes.  The coyotes are seeking the small animals as a food source.  You may wish to discontinue feeding wildlife to avoid attracting coyotes.

Please secure any refuse containers that are outside and avoid placing food outside for pets.
