A Message from Mayor Tom Poynton

Lake Zurich's Water Supply is Safe and Secure

The public water supply crisis that is unfolding in Flint, Michigan is a tragedy. It represents a failure of many levels of government. This failure of a basic government function is causing an unknown amount of harm to the 100,000 residents who call Flint home and have been exposed to the toxic, lead-based local water supply.

I want to ensure the residents of Lake Zurich that our local water supply is safe and secure.

When government is functioning at its best, it usually goes unnoticed and can easily be forgotten. Government services occur quietly in the background of our busy lives, but these services impact us every single day.

It is only when these services fail that people remember the critical role government plays in protecting our health, safety, and welfare.  This is especially true at the local municipal level.

There are things most of us rarely think about; reliable garbage collection services, modern plumbing infrastructure that takes our sewage far away from our homes, well-illuminated neighborhoods, traffic lights that work properly to keep traffic flowing, sidewalks and streets that are safe, 24-hour police patrol, EMS and fire response that is minutes away when we need it, and perhaps most importantly, a clean and safe public water supply.

Ensuring the safety of the public water supply is a foundational responsibility of local government. It is maybe the most important service the Village provides.

I want to remind our residents that our local water supply is SAFE. Here are some facts.
  • Lake Zurich's water supply is highly regulated, inspected and treated daily to meet every single EPA standard.

  • The Village tests our water every day.

  • The annual water quality report concludes Lake Zurich's water supply is not susceptible to contamination.

  • Recent EPA field inspections and evaluations determined our water system is properly operated, maintained, and protected.

  • Municipal well facilities are exemplary, monitoring is conducted at multiple distribution points, and the natural environmental characteristics of the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer are favorable.

  • The Village has six deep-wells drilled into the aquifer and water is pumped from each well based on a rotational cycle.

  • Wells are equipped with high-tech Ion Exchange treatment systems to ensure high-quality water.

  • Your home can receive water from any of the Lake Zurich well locations but typically the water you receive is a blend from multiple wells.
It is a well-functioning system and Lake Zurich residents do not have any reasons for concern.

While most of us do not think about municipal government operations, rest assured that professional and highly trained Village employees think about our important responsibilities every single day.

It is my promise to you, as Lake Zurich's Mayor, that ensuring a continued safe public water supply is paramount to the Village Board and professional Village Staff.

Thomas M. Poynton
Lake Zurich Mayor
