Police Working Overtime this Weekend to Keep You Safe

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

As 2015 comes to a close, the Lake Zurich Police Department will be working overtime this New Year's holiday weekend.  The effort has one simple goal - to save lives and reduce fatalities and serious injuries on Illinois roadways.

Lake Zurich Police Sergeant Goodyear reminds everyone, "If you are going to drink this holiday, plan another way home before the celebration begins - and always remember to buckle up."

During last year's New Year's holiday period, 10 people lost their lives and 856 were injured in motor-vehicle crashes in Illinois. Five of the 10 fatalities resulted from crashes in which a driver had been drinking.

Do your part to make this a safe holiday weekend and achieve zero fatalities by following these simple rules:
  • Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.
  • If you've been drinking, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member.
  • Promptly report drunk drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement.
  • Wear your seat belt and make sure all passengers are safely buckled up. It is your best defense against a drunk driver.

Lake Zurich Capital Improvement Plan

Updated Plan Available to Citizens

Lake Zurich's updated five year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is being presented to the Board of Trustees at the January 4, 2016 meeting.  The CIP impacts each Lake Zurich household and business, as it identifies capital projects and equipment purchases, provides a planning schedule, and identifies options for financing the projects.

The CIP includes 108 projects that total over $30 million.  In the next fiscal year budget, 29 projects are being recommended for funding consideration, totaling $3.8 million.

View the CIP and projects planned for Lake Zurich here.

Oak Ridge Marsh Nature Park

Volunteer for Brush Clearing

Work off some of those extra holiday calories this Saturday, January 2 from 9:00 am to noon at a restoration workday at the Oak Ridge Marsh Nature Park, 500 Lions Drive.

The Ancient Oaks Foundation is looking for volunteers to clear brush so dress for the weather in layers, wear sturdy boots and work gloves.  Bring hand saws and loppers if you have them.

Come make new friends while contributing to the health of Lake Zurich's oak woodlands.  See you Saturday morning!

Radon Gas Testing Kits Available through the Health Department

Short-Term Kits Available for $10

The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is providing radon testing kids for residents to check the radon levels in their homes or apartments during the winter months.  To purchase a kit, call 847-377-8030.

Radon increases the risk of lung cancer and the best time to check for radon is during cold weather when windows and doors remain closed.

Short-term test kits are available through the County Health Department for $10.  The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation by Health Department staff.  Test kits are also available from area hardware and building supply stores.

Radon, an odorless and colorless gas naturally found in rock and soil, seeps into homes from the soil through cracks in the basement floor and foundation, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, floor drains, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations.  Although radon gas is measurable everywhere, the highest readings are normally found in the basement and first floor levels of homes and apartments.

To purchase a kit, call 847-377-8030 or visit the Health Department online.
