A Message from the Mayor

Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month

Vehicle crashes killed 991 people in Illinois during 2013. Hundreds of those deaths involved a driver impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Mayor Tom Poynton has proclaimed December as Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month throughout the Village of Lake Zurich.  Lets work together to promote safer and healthier behaviors regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs this December holiday season and throughout the year.

Moving Forward with Downtown Debt Solution

Village Rearranges Downtown TIF  for Long Term Fiscal Sustainability

The Village is in the process of restructuring the downtown TIF (tax increment financing) district. This is part of an innovative solution to the debt burden that was created prior to 2006 with the purchase of several downtown properties.

Part of the strategy for dealing with this legacy TIF debt is to remove several parcels of land that have remained undeveloped in order to restore and enhance the tax base of the TIF.  In other words, by removing "negatively valued" parcels, the overall value of the entire TIF district increases.

The Village is also moving forward with what can be considered a splitting of the original TIF district into two TIF districts.  In effect, doing this will reset the value of the tax base for most of downtown and generally result in a healthier and more fiscally sustainable TIF situation for Lake Zurich.

Upcoming Public Meetings

Municipal debt restructuring and TIF districts are indeed complex topics.  The Village has two public meetings scheduled related to the TIF district.  Please join us if you have questions or would like to learn more about our progress in moving Lake Zurich forward.

Soon after the holidays, residents will receive a notice from Waste Management with information about the new two-wheeled refuse cart option that begins in March.  New options for the weekly curbside refuse collection will include:

Option #1, $22.39/month:  96-gallon refuse cart with no sticker fees for extra bags outside the cart.

Option #2, $20.39/month:  64-gallon refuse cart with extra bags $2.50 each.

Option #3, $19.89/month:  35-gallon refuse cart with extra bags $2.50 each.  Available only to townhome residents and seniors 65 years and up.

The new carts will be delivered to residents in March and the new rates will become effective April 1st.  Residents will automatically receive a 96-gallon cart unless a different option is selected.

Downtown 2034:  Envision Lake Zurich

Volunteers Needed for Downtown Vision Process

The Village of  Lake Zurich is seeking interested residents, business owners, and other community stakeholders to participate in a future working group that will consider a new vision for downtown Lake Zurich.

Recent economic challenges require us to re-examine the planned future for downtown Lake Zurich.  What should future development look like?  What type of commercial activity should be sought?  What type of buildings do we want?  What should downtown public gathering spaces look and feel like?   These are just a few of the important questions that need to be answered as we plan for the next 20 years and beyond.

As economic opportunities begin to open up across our region and in our Village, it is important for us to establish and communicate our vision for Lake Zurich's downtown.  If you are interested in volunteering your time for this important initiative, please fill out the brief survey below.

Street Light Modernization Program

Using Green Technology to Brighten Lake Zurich's Future

The Village is preparing to launch a Street Light Modernization Program that would use LED lights to gradually replace traditional street lighting throughout the Village.

This would significantly save on annual electricity costs and use far less energy, thus reducing the cost of municipal operations and having a positive impact on the environment.

The Village currently has two active LED light "test locations" installed at the corner of Pheasant Ridge Drive and Partridge Lane as well as on Pleasant Road south of Honey Lake Road (behind Holiday Inn Express).

We want to know what you think about them. Feel free to drive by and check it out.

If you have any feedback on the LED lighting, please let us know at info@LakeZurich.org.

Drop Off Toys at Village Hall

We need your help!

Please consider dropping off a new, unwrapped toy in the lobby of Village Hall for the annual Toys for Tots program.  The box is right in the Village Hall lobby, 70 E. Main Street.  We are open Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during the holiday season and distribute these toys as gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

ComEd Meters Coming Soon to Lake Zurich
Smart Meter Rollout Begins in 2015

Starting in 2015, ComEd will be installing about 8,000 smart meters throughout Lake Zurich.

A smart meter is a digital electric meter that collects energy-usage information and securely sends it to ComEd.  This helps eliminate estimated bills.

Smart meters are an important step to improving the delivery of electricity for consumers and are important building blocks of the smart grid.  They will give more insight into energy usage and more control over energy expenses so you can save money on your monthly electric bills.

Installations will occur at no cost to residents or business owners.
