NAFC Fencers Practice with Wheelchair Fencers at Shepard Spinal Center
Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., several NAFC fencers have been attending practice with Shepard Spinal Center wheelchair fencers. NAFC Coach Julio Diaz leads the team at Shepard. Paralympic bound wheelchair fencers Dennis Aspy and Elle Gilbert fence on the Shepard team and practice at NAFC as well. Among the advantages of learning wheelchair fencing for those who are able-bodied are: precision point control and refinement of fencing techniques, without retreating to the back of the strip or fleching!

Meet Rick and Andrea Ormsby
Rick Ormsby
Job/Place of work: Radiochemist with Eckert & Ziegler Analytics (I make things radioactive)
What made you interested in starting fencing?:
I have always been fascinated with swordplay, starting with an interest in Star Wars as a child and then Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean as an adult. Andrea and I have always thought about taking up some form of fencing but never had an outlet. We were looking for a fun athletic activity to get us off the couch and spend some time together. We were going bowling one night, pulled into the wrong parking lot and were shocked to see a window filled with fencers! We looked up the NAFC and immediately found ourselves trying to strike each other through the heart on Valentines day, the 12th anniversary of our first date.
What is the most difficult aspect about fencing?:
Building up the endurance to keep the power and distance of my lunges consistent throughout 15-30 minutes of fencing. Combining new sword techniques with advanced footwork (ballestra, fleche, etc.) has been very challenging, but gets easier every week.
What are your goals in your fencing career?:
I would like to build up my endurance, meet some new foilists and start fencing against new opponents over the course of this year, and eventually participate in more formal competitions.
What are your hobbies outside of fencing?
Cooking and baking (my specialty is slow smoked BBQ), photography, camping, teaching my son about Star Wars, and games of any type (espeically board games, card games, and videogames).
Andrea Ormsby
Age: 31
Place of work: Raising a 2 year old and a 31 year old at the house, in the park, on the lake, and anywhere else you can imagine.
What made you interested in starting fencing?:
Andrea has watched the movie The Princess Bride over and over throughout her life, she knows each line and gesture by heart. Her fascination with romantic swashbuckling pirates, Medieval Times, and the Renaissance Festival has drawn her to the art and nobility of swordplay.
What is the most difficult aspect about fencing?: Finding the aggressive or predatory instincts required to take offensive actions without hesitating.
What are your goals in your fencing career?: To develop more confidence initiating attacks and taking offensive actions while adapting to the opponents reactions.
What are your hobbies outside of fencing?
Andrea is natural musician. She sings, plays guitar, dabbles in the mandolin, and is trying to break into playing a standing bass. She has been actively participating in the bluegrass jam scene at the Marietta Square for the last two years. She also enjoys designing, constructing, and wearing costumes for events such as Dragon Con, Ren Fest, and Halloween.
