FROM THE COACH
"I'm scared every time I go into the ring, but it's how you handle it. What you have to do is plant your feet, bite down on your mouthpiece and say, 'Let's go.' "
 - Mike Tyson
FENCING > Baseball, Lacrosse, and Soccer!
Twelve-year old NAFC fencer Joe Gonzalez recently decided that rather than divide his time between baseball and fencing, he wanted to focus his efforts on the strip. When asked what helped him make the decision between sports, Joe said "I had more fun fencing than I did playing baseball. I have better friends here than I did in a lot of the other sports that I played. NAFC has a great team environment."

To up his game, Joe participates in the Forge Boxing Cross Training class and also takes private lessons from Head Coach John Terris and Coach Jerry Heilpern. "Joe is extremely focused and a hard worker. I've seen such a vast improvement in his skill and his maturity. Joe is shaping into a a great fencer." says Coach Terris.

Joe is looking forward to a fun and challenging 2013-2014 tournament season. Keep up the great work Joe! Your dedication is inspiring to us all!

FENCER PROFILE

 Meet Our NAFC Fencers!
Name:
Dr. Timothy Furnish
Age:
53

Work:
Islamic world/counter-terrorism consultant to the US military, media commentator

How long have you
been fencing?

I fenced for a year in 1980, and I picked it up again about a year ago. Even though I am not left-handed, I decided to fence left-handed when I took the sport (back) up a year ago. I thought that it would be an advantage and it couldn't hurt to stimulate the other side of my brain at my age.

What made you interested in fencing
My interest in military history and "Lord of the Rings".

What is the hardest thing to learn about fencing?
Proper footwork! I swear, I hate footwork.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of learning to fence?
Fencing is both mental and physical. It's more mentally challenging than many other sports. Fencing is based in history, having descended from dueling, and has been around for centuries.

How does fencing compare to other sports you have participated in?
I've played basketball, baseball, threw javelin, run cross-country and track in the past. Fencing is more fun than other solitary sports such as running or tennis. It's not a completely solitary sport and it's not exclusively a team sport. You are interacting with another person while competing on your own.

What are your competition goals for this season?
To qualify for Vet50 in Nationals.
