Hottest jobs, industries and cities for IT pay in 2015

There's good news in Computerworld's IT Salary Survey results this year: As the economy has continued to improve in the past 12 months, so has the percentage of respondents reporting that they received raises. This year, 67% of respondents reported a raise, with only 4% reporting a pay cut, compared with 60% reporting a raise and 8% reporting a pay cut in 2014.

What's more, for the first time since the economic downturn, we're seeing significant year-over-year gains in IT compensation. Total average compensation (salary plus bonus) is up 3.6% in 2015, versus 2.0% in 2014. This year, average salaries increased 3.6% and average bonuses increased 4.6%.

But those with the right IT roles who work in the right industries and live in the right metro regions reported even stronger gains in pay.

Jobless claims average falls by 4,250 to 15-year low

The US four-week moving average of initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 4,250 last week to a total of 279,500 from the previous week's unrevised average, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the US Department of Labor.

This is the lowest level for this average since May 6, 2000, when it was 279,250.  The four-week moving average decreases the volatility of the weekly numbers.

Total initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended May 2 rose by 3,000 to a total of 265,000 from the prvious week's unrevised level.

Bloomberg reports the dearth of applications for unemployment benefits shows demand remains strong for employers to maintain staffing levels.  Claims rose less than its median forecast of 47 economists, which called for 278,000 claims.

No special factors impacted this week's initial claims.
