Survey finds 54% to work in retirement, more employers hiring older workers

More workers will work post-retirement, according to a study released today from CareerBuilder. The survey found 54% of workers over the age of 60 will work after retiring from their current career - up from 45% in a similar survey last year. Of this group, 81% said they will most likely work part-time, while 19% plan to continue working full-time.

Customer service, retail and consulting are the three most common jobs these workers plan to pursue.

Additionally, employers look to hire more seasoned staff. The survey found 54% of private-sector employers hired workers over the age of 50 in 2014 - up six points from 48% last year - and 57% plan to do so in 2015.

IT jobs up 0.4% in US, TechServe Alliance reports
The number of IT jobs in the US rose 0.4% in January to more than 4.8 million, according to the TechServe Alliance, the national trade association for IT & engineering staffing and solutions firms.  On a year-over-year basis, the number of IT jobs rose 4.7% in the US for a total addition of 216,800 IT workers.

The US also posted a 0.2% increase in engineering jobs in January for a total of more than 2.5 million. On a year-over-year basis, the number of engineering jobs rose 1.8% in the US, adding 43,700 engineering workers.
"In January, IT and engineering employment showed strength as we kicked-off 2015. Following robust growth in 2014, all indications are that we will have another strong year for IT and engineering employment in 2015," said TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts. "While I am confident demand will remain strong absent a macro-economic or political shock, an inadequate supply of talent in high demand skill sets will continue to be a challenge. Without a significant increase in the availability of talent by growing the domestic IT and engineering workforce or increasing the availability of high-skilled foreign professionals, all industries dependent on technical talent will continue to be at risk of not having their needs fully met."
