IT Professionals Market Update

Techserve Alliance released their latest update on IT Professionals in the National Marketplace and found employment numbers are up. A total of 248,000 jobs were added in September and above 200,000 in the last seven out of eight months. IT Jobs are increasing at record rates.  Unemployment fell to 5.9% in August 2014 from 7.2% in 2013 (U.S. Department of Labor Statistics).  In California, IT unemployment is hovering at 2.9% and 6.2% for non IT professionals, which explains why many of our customers are finding hiring new talent into their organizations so difficult. The U.S. GDP grew 4% in the second quarter and many economists are now projecting a strong annual growth rate above 3% for the remainder of the year.

Many hiring managers who I meet with weekly ask me, "What can I do in a tight labor market to hire the best possible talent for my organization?" My advice is always to make sure your salary offering and company benefits are on par with market standards. Employees have a wide range of opportunities to choose from and are taking advantage of strong corporate employee programs. Job seekers today are interested in corporate culture, flexible work schedules to include telecommuting, dress code, salary, family medical benefits, stock options, and bonus programs. I see many companies in the interview phase not promote their internal staff, and I believe this is a significant missed opportunity. Make sure you are touting the success and years of experience of your team, their tenure within your organization and career path modeling. Potential candidates want to feel part of something and believe they are making an impact on the business, and managers during the interview stage should highlight how their open position has an impact on the direct consumer. Moreover, I have seen the most success in obtaining talent deriving from companies who show they are serious about hiring and in doing so, they have implemented a streamlined interview and onboarding process. Companies that struggle finding candidates are typically spreading out their interviews over two to three weeks and onboarding their staff up to three to four weeks thereafter. Talented candidates are normally already wooed away by the competition by the second interview.

If you are looking to hire new staff and would like interview support and training for your direct managers, ITC would be pleased to assist. As always, thank you for making ITC successful in what we do and I hope that this article will be of benefit to you in some capacity.

Warmly,

Nicole McMackin

President
