Summer prep pays off as school begins in Douglas County
T he first batch of Douglas County Schools have already marked their first day of school, beginning classes as early as August 5.
Students donned with new threads and fresh school supplies packed in their backpacks stool outside of Meadow View Elementary with their parents on Monday, waiting to meet their new teachers.
"I feel really excited," exclaimed Brooke Botos.
While the gathering means that summer break is coming to a conclusion, the crowd was buzzing with excitement for the promising new year ahead.
"The first day of school is contagious. You come here and they are so excited. They have their backpacks, dressed up in some sort of outfit that they just love, happy to see their friends," said Superintendent Dr. Liz Fagen.
"Love all the teachers, love the staff and we're excited about the Artful Learning that they're putting into place," added Meadow View parent Jeff Botos. Read more

School Marshal program launches
Douglas County Sheriff's deputies and officers from Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Parker Police Departments will be visiting our schools daily as part of the innovative new safety program that launches with the beginning of the school year.

After the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of 2012, DCSD officials created a Safety Committee that recommended the creation of the School Marshal Program. As part of a 'layered approach' to ensure safe schools, law enforcement officers will be spending time in schools and buildings all across the District.
The program, which is a first-of-its kind in the nation, has received a considerable amount of media attention, most recently by Fox31. |

"If you look up, you will see what the former principal used to say," he said, pointing up to a mural with the quote, 'Take Care of One Another.' "I think that is something that we do well," Gotchey said. Read more
