President's Message
|
Welcome to 2015! I continue to be so impressed by the level of support the Friends organization receives from the South Pasadena community. Our daily effort to ensure that the library has the resources necessary to provide access, opportunity, and life long learning to all patrons is a sincere privilege and I look forward to another year full of programs and activities, and to continuing the Friends' commitment to providing critical resources for our library patrons and staff.
In 2014, the Friends were proud to have partnered with the library, Restoration Concerts Committee, and several local organizations to present 39 programs and events in the Community Room with a total attendance of more than 5,700! These programs included our ever-popular author nights, film screenings, concerts and live theatre. We also proudly funded the library's Summer Reading Program where 2,562 local kids read 31,615 books!
To kick off 2015, the Friends hosted its Annual Meeting which featured a lively presentation by Professor Bill Deverell about the aftermath of the Civil War in the West. Educational and thoughtful presentations like Professor Deverell's happen nearly twice per month in the Community Room and the Friends are honored to be able to provide them free to the entire South Pasadena community.
I encourage you to continue to support the Friends of the Library and to join us throughout the year for events and programs being hosted at the library. On behalf of the entire Friends organization, thank you for being an important part of our success.
Ann Messana

Longtime South Pasadena resident Beverly Engler passed away on December 27, with her family nearby, after a long battle with cancer.
Bev and her husband Mark married 57 years ago, beginning their lives together in San Francisco. They moved to South Pasadena with their children Mark, Suzanne, and Marcy in 1966.
Bev was a tireless and enthusiastic volunteer in the community, including serving as President of the Monterey Hills School PTA, a frequent PTA committee member, an active SPEF fundraiser, a Little League concession manager, and a leader within her children's Scout troops.
Bev also co-founded the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library Bookstore, where she devoted thousands of volunteer hours over nearly 30 years. The fundraising auctions and book sales Bev helped establish and manage attracted book collectors throughout the state. She was honored for her service with a Volunteer of the Year award by the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners.
Bev was an avid reader, an accomplished baker, and an award winning quilter. She also enjoyed playing golf with family and friends at Oakmont Country Club. She discovered a love for travel early in life, visiting Cuba in the 1950s, and traveled to many parts of Europe and Asia with her husband and family. However, she most enjoyed the beach, and it was her annual trips to Kauai with her husband, children, and grandchildren that brought her the greatest joy.
In addition to her husband and children, Bev is survived by her daughter in law Mary, son in laws Hunter and Michael, and grandchildren Jaime, Peter, Kelly, Logan, Shelby, Haley and Whitney. Donations may be made in her memory to the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library/Beverly Engler Memorial Fund.

The Friends 2015 Membership Campaign is off to a strong start with more than $17,000 in contributions from 220 donors. However, we are only half way to our membership goal, so please renew your membership today. Annual unrestricted contributions are the backbone of the Friends organization and they strengthen our library's daily effort to meet the educational, informational, and cultural needs of the South Pasadena community.
To "Kindle" early support for the 2015 Campaign, every new and renewing membership received by January 15 was included in a drawing held at the Friends Annual Meeting for a new touchscreen Kindle eReader. The winning name was South Pasadena resident Mimi White! Congratulations to Mimi and thanks to everyone who has joined or renewed their membership with the Friends. Membership donations may be mailed to Friends of the Library, 1100 Oxley Street, South Pasadena, CA 91030 or donate online.

New Toys for Children's Room
|
 | | Andy Lippman & toys |
Library Board of Trustees member Andy Lippman contributed funds to the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library to purchase new toys for the Children's Room. The Library's Children's Services staff selected and the Friends purchased a sturdy lock and latches box, a town center rug, a set of jumbo animals, octagonal blocks and bunny builder blocks. These toys are designed to help children develop dexterity and fine motor control, improve memory skills, strengthen an understanding of spatial relationships, build vocabulary and language development, and promote color recognition. In turn, those skills foster reading and learning. Children are encouraged to visit the Library to play with these new toys and check out library materials as well.

The South Pasadena Public Library has added two new databases to the Library online resources including NoveList Plus and Book Browse. Both of these databases are excellent resources for book groups or any avid reader looking for a good book to read next.
NoveList Plus is a valuable tool for identifying books of a similar style, known as read-alikes, to books that have already been read. For example, readers who enjoyed Alan Bradley's Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie series will get read-alike book recommendations for each title in the series, the author and the series itself. NoveList Plus also provides recommended reading lists, book discussion guides, and book reviews for titles across all ages. This database goes beyond mere genre definitions and identifies writing style, tone and storyline descriptors as another way to find books that appeal to a certain type of reader.
BookBrowse features top title picks each week and every entry title contains a book summary, excerpt, reading guide, reviews, author biographies, interviews and read-alike recommendations. Users can opt-in to a bi-monthly email newsletter and can participate in an online book discussion group. There is also a link to see if a particular title is in the South Pasadena Public Library collection.
These new databases and many practical, powerful others are available at www.southpasadenaca.gov/library, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the bottom of the home page, the "Online Resources" link will show a list of all the library databases with a description.
For more information, please call the Reference Desk (626) 403-7350 or email rdesk@southpasadenaca.gov.
