Bookstore's Annual Holiday Sale

Kick-Off Preview Night November 21

Members of the Friends are lucky because they get first picks from the great display of gift quality fiction and non-fiction at the annual holiday sale which will kick off with Preview Night on Friday,  Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room.

Of course, pity is taken on the unenlightened and they are permitted  to buy memberships at the door. As in recent years, free wine and refreshments will be provided and free gift wrapping for purchases made that night.

A special  feature will be the  opportunity to buy a copy of the new elegant, softcover book "South Pasadena History and Landmarks Guide Book" published by the  South Pasadena Historical Foundation. This is a book that should be in every local household.  It is very well done, with a detailed map and many color pictures. It sells for $5, with $1 returning to the Friends organization. The book will be available in the Friends bookstore after the sale.

Another feature at Preview Night will be the sale of three framed artworks.  One is a black and white engraver's proof of a Bil Keene cartoon "The Family Circus" published on April 8, 1984 in an Iowa newspaper by the Register and Tribune Syndicate.

Also included is a watercolor of the Sydney, Australia  bay by Alison and Allan  entitled "Neutra Bay to Kirribilli"  and a large print of a striped cat snoozing comfortably among shelves of books.

The  sale  will be open to the public for the next two days in the Community Room before moving downstairs to the main floor where it will continue until Dec. 31.

P.S.  That is not a typo. It is spelled Bil.

For 64 years, the Friends of the Library has provided the volunteer and financial resources necessary to strengthen our Library's daily effort to provide free and accessible access for all patrons.  Each year, the Friends contribute vital funding for dozens of weekly programs including Author Nights, Film Screenings, Summer Reading Program, Live Online Homework Help, Teen and Book Club Programs, as well as funding for eBooks, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and quick purchase books. In addition, the Friends provide annual funding for two library interns, an investment in local history resources, and a variety of community programs including the annual Moon Festival and the Eclectic Music Festival.

The South Pasadena Public library is a hub of knowledge, culture, and communication. Without your loyalty and support, our Library's valuable community services would surely suffer. The ongoing support of our members determines what our Library is today and what it will be in years to come.

I encourage you to Spread the Word(s) by making the Friends a priority and generously supporting the 2015 Membership Campaign. Your tax-deductible support will ensure that our wonderful Library continues to meet the needs of the entire South Pasadena community. Donations may also be made online through the Friends website.

With thanks for your ongoing generosity and support.

Ann Messana

President

South Pas Jazz Musician Mark Hatch Donates

Entire Personal CD Collection to Library

Professional jazz musician, Mark Hatch, a longtime South Pasadena resident, is in the midst of donating his entire personal CD collection, about 1500 discs in all, to the South Pasadena Public Library. Mark recently brought by the first giant batch -about 900 titles the Library doesn't already own-- which will greatly enhance the Library's already expansive collection. The CDs will be added to the Library collection in incremental amounts over the next two years or so and will help give the South Pasadena Library one of the most impressive checkout CD collections in the Greater Los Angeles area. In 2015 Mark will also be donating about 400 to 500 CDs of titles already in the Library's collection to the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library to be used for a fundraiser.

For many years Mark Hatch has been active as a performer, composer, and arranger and for playing the Flugelhorn, a trumpet-like instrument. Mark toured and recorded with the Ray Charles Orchestra, and then served as musical director for Chaka Khan, as well as performing and recording with Rufus, Aretha Franklin, Flora Purim, Louie Bellson, and many others.

"This music collection represents my over 30 years of collecting, exploring, and discovering music, both as a musician and as just a listener," explained Mark. "My hope is that this collection will be a great resource for further musical discoveries and exploration." "Many of us can look back and remember what a huge part libraries have played in our discovery of the world around us...the fun of one work of art capturing one's imagination, and then leading to another. It's like a trail that leads from one discovery to the next. I also wanted to donate this collection to the library for all the present and future budding musicians out there. There is a whole world of great music in this collection, just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed."

1. The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway, Scribner's Sons, New York, 1952. First edition, first printing.

Dust jacket Good; a few small tears. All first issue points present: Scribner's seal and "A" on copyright page.  Blue cloth with silver lettering. No markings in book from previous owners. The silver lettering on spine is bright with very minor wear.  Cloth boards have almost no fading or soiling. Not book club edition. A nicely preserved copy. This iconic tale of man's struggle with nature and with himself, and the density of discernible themes, will reel you in. They won Hemingway the Pulitzer and no doubt influenced the Nobel Prize, too. You will not find this book at this price again!

Minimum Bid $100  Minimum Raise $10.

2. The Gallery of Engravings, Volumes 2 and 3 (of 3 issued), edited by Wright and Timperley, Fisher,Son & Co.,London, dated by Preface, 1846.

No dust jackets. Half bound, corner and spines scuffed. Interior has sporadic foxing, browning, but hinges tight. Many distinctive engravings - portraits of famous people, literary scenes, and landscapes - many protected by tissue guards.  Illustrations are juxtaposed with short poems and essays. Two for...

Minimum Bid $25  Minimum Raise $5

3. Lost King of Oz, Ruth Plumly Thompson, Reilly & Lee, Co., Chicago, 1925. #19 of canon.

No dust jacket. All twelve full color plates. Condition

Good. Dorothy is accidentally transported to Hollywood where she meets Humpy, a live stunt dummy, and brings him back to Oz.

Minimum Bid $20  Minimum Raise $5

4. The Giant Horse of Oz, 1st pub.1928. Ruth Plumly Thompson. Reilly & Lee, Chicago.

This may be later printing from 30s. Canon #22.

No dust jacket. No color plates: many black and white illustrations. Features Trot, from the Sea Fairies and Sky Island.

Minimum Bid $15  Minimum Raise $3

5. Lowney's Cook Book, Maria Willett Howard, Lowney, Boston, 1908, revised from orig. ed. of 1907.

No dust jacket. Top and bottom of spine rubbed, otherwise Good. Another early cookbook standby, put out by the Walter M. Lowney Chocolate Co., which later became Hershey's. Along with a well compiled treasury of American/Edwardian recipes, there is much vital information herein, such as: a listing of a butler's duties, and rules for the cover (settings) for the formal dinner - no less than 10 courses, natch. You cannot do without this.

Minimum Bid $7  Minimum Raise $3

6. Victory at Midway, Griffith Baily Coale, Farrah & Rinehart, 1944

No dust jacket. Condition Good. Written and quite luminously illustrated primarily by US Navy artists, who show that there is beauty and hope even in the midst of war. The point of view of the text is unique and the reproduced sketches and oil paintings are stunning in their immediacy. If it is art and/or history you want, both are here in good measure.

As a bonus, here is a copy of the CINCPAC Guide to the Western Pacific, 1945, put out for American forces.

Minimum Bid $12  Minimum Raise $3

7. "I was there" with the Yanks in France, C. Leroy Baldridge, together with verses by Hilmar R. Baukhage, Putnam's Sons, New York, 1919.

No dust jacket. Unstated 1st edition.  Edges chafed, corner tips bumped. Interior Good. Fine, evocative black and white illustrations, with a few in color, by Baldridge (later better known as illustrator Cyrus LeRoy) interspersed with moving verses by Baukhage - both volunteers in the US Army during World War I. A graphic memoir of their time on the Western Front - 1917 - 1919. This is a rare find.

Minimum Bid $20  Minimum Raise $3

8. Three issues of Nam magazine, Marvel Comics, New World Company, New York, all 1987: April V1 #5, June V1 #7, July V1 #8.

Paper, Fair to Good condition. Stories of the Vietnam war. All three for ...

Minimum Bid $10  Minimum Raise $3.

9. The D-Day Experience, Richard Holmes, in association with the Imperial War Museum, Carlton Books, London. 2010.

No dust jacket, as issued. 1st edition. Simply the best-ever short introduction  to the importance of D-Day: 63 pages of photographs, maps, etc. with facsimile documents in pockets that bring these dramatic events to life. Exciting, absorbing.

Minimum Bid $10  Minimum Raise $3

10. Revolt in the Desert, T.E. Lawrence, Black Dog & Leventhal, 2004.

Very Good, dust jacket and Book. Here's a chance to get a great reprint copy of a classic (orig. pub. 1926), at a low cost. (Note: R. in the D. is actually an abridgement of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, also 1926). Lawrence played a significant role in the Arab Revolt against the Turks in 1916 - 1917. His huge range of associations and activities were even more glorified by his own telling of the tale, the sensationalized reporting of Lowell Thomas, and the 1962 film based on his World War I doings. Still - this is very much worth reading, for a greater understanding of Lawrence himself and of tangled Middle East history.

Minimum Bid $5  Minimum Raise $3.

"Great Books Collection" comes to the Library

Recently, a surprise arrived at the Library when Petra Galindo, a South Pasadena resident of almost 20 years, dropped in and stated she wanted to donate her set of the "Great Books." She was moving and packing her books while prioritizing what to keep. She realized that her "Great Books" set needed to be where more people would have access to them.

She also discovered that the South Pasadena Public Library no longer possessed a set and wanted others to have access to them and find inspiration from them as she had. Her entire 'near mint' set is being added to the library collection. Three boxes of her other book donations have gone to the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library for their bookstore and special sales.

There's still time to join the Book Discussion Group. Read the last book from the 2014 Library Book Group selection list and meet us at 7 PM  in the Library for some lively discussion.
